The main thing is being able to prove it to yourself without a doubt as mentioned in the link above. I feel it helps to rehearse the moment that you become lucid during your RC's and day practices…rehearsing a few moments of really stopping and examining your true state, that this world around you is all a dream and that you can pretty much do anything that you want! Add to this rubbing your hands and saying out loud "I'm dreaming, I'm dreaming" and before you know it you will be extending the time that you remain lucid! Even if the dreams seems to be fading to black or gray…hang in there with your consciousness in tact and, on many occasions, you will find yourself entering the next dream while remaining lucid.
To answer your basic question, short LD's are common early on, but know that it doesn't have to stay that way long!
