In the past two nights, I've had three lucid dreams. Considering my usual frequency of lucids, this is incredibly high for me, and I think there must be something causing it. The one thing that I can think of is that I spent time drawing shortly before going to sleep both nights, and I hadn't drawn for some time before.
Has anybody else noticed a similar correlation between some sort of creative activity and lucid dreams? If they really are related, I wonder what the reason is.
well, all the lucid dreamers I know are heavily right-brained. The best lucid dreamer I know seems to have no left brain at all. I have no facts but I'm pretty sure dreaming in general is tied to the right brain, hence the more conceptual and less logical dream content. It follows that by engaging in any kind of creative activity can help dream vividness, and therefore make it easier to become lucid.
Being creative is very similar to dreaming. If you are drawing, composing, inventing, .... you are creating something new in your mind. Some people are able to make up a whole world with creatures, landscapes and many different characters (i.e. Tolkien's "Lord Of The Rings") with nothing more then their brain and a pencil. It would be interesting to hear about the dreams some of our genious artists have as I am sure many of them were inspired by their dreams.
Dangeruss also mentioned a very important aspect of how our brain works. Sadly, not everyone is capable of using the right half of our brain to the same extent. With the time you spend drawing, you are actually training and stimulating your right brain half (and the interaction between left / right half), which could possibly lead to more vivid or even lucid dreams.
My advise to you would be to keep drawing and maybe even try to draw the scenes / characters / creatures you see in your dreams. Instead of writing your dream journal, you could also try to draw some of it, especially if you find it difficult to explain with words.
