Not every character who appears in religious clothing is a exemplar of peak autonomy and novelty. All tho they do seem to be as a whole more complex than your average dream character for whatever reason, perhaps they are representations or extensions of a particularly creative or emotionally charged unconscious centre, part, or complex. They are as a whole for myself a rare event and most often occur randomly, perhaps once in 50, maybe even more.
Yes I have often asked them what their ontological basis is, of course this is the first thing that comes to mind, the hope of proof of a metaphysical realm or beings is strong in me, it would be a great consolation to be personally assured of the existence of other equally real states of existence which would prove personal immortality. This may be asking a lot. Even if a dream character showed up riding a chariot made of purple plasma and then gave a profound dissertation on the structure of the unseen realms of existence, the purpose of existence, moral imperatives, and basically everything you would expect a higher being to say, there is no way to prove to others or even yourself after the fact what this event actually meant, what was its source.
This has been my case. Due to the fickle nature of memory in even lucid dreams sometimes, especially in reference to conversations, I cannot remember in detail exactly what was said. Excuse my lack of direct quotes, but here is one conversation that stood out in particular. I walk into a garage, there are two gentlemen standing in the corner speaking to each other. A conversation gets started and what unfolds is one of the most vivid and singular occasions I recall from my lucid dreaming career. What first drew my surprise was the apparent friendliness of the two individuals toward each other, their naturalness, the way they looked at one another and smiled when I asked certain questions, the way one worked off what the other was just saying. Any way, they told me over a time period of perhaps five minutes things which amazed me by their clearness and continuity, things often lacking in dream conversations. They said that the dream world was centred in the middle of at least 4 distinct universes, a bit like a segmented plus sign. We on this plane exist in the universe underneath this centre, they said that our place in this configuration was why lucid dreaming was so rare and why our dream life was so hard to remember, something about a natural buffer whose purpose and effect was to separate this universe from those above it. They themselves said they were from one of the universes which were horizontal in relation to the centre 'dream' universe and thus they were able to enter it with ease and perfect clarity any time they wished, which explained their casual attitude to the situation. They assured me that they were in fact real beings with consciousnesses all their own and did not exist only in my brain.
It should be said that I at this time had some knowledge of occult and hermetic theory, not unlike what was explained to me in this dream situation. I do not know if I should account for this by saying that these beings were simply restating and confirming what occultists have actually already known, or it was my unconscious retelling these theories in the guise of two average looking men in a garage. There has been other situations, one where I met a monk walking down the rode, the gist of this conversation was 'of course I am real'. There have been other times where similar things have happened, but I simply can only recall the conversations in the most general way, nor do I have access to my original notes due to them being lost in a move some time ago to my great regret.
I am sorry I cannot give you more detail about those apparently religious figures I have met, other than the fact that yes I have met them and they most often have a seemingly high intelligence and proclaim their own self-awareness. My visual recall is much greater than my audio, which is not ideal as one can imagine, especially when I awake with shadows of profound things rattling around in the background of my mind, then see them like a column of steam dissolving into the atmosphere taking whatever numinous and specific truths with it.
I most closely Identify with Buddhist philosophy, but I do also have a inclination to western occultism as I said. As for my belief on the after life, this wavers constantly, one day I think it is true, and the next I do not.
