      Dream recall help

      Hello,

      So I could really use some help with my dream recall.
      Yes, I do keep a DJ, mantras however dont work for me, whenever I set an intention before sleep, even if I repeat the mantra until I fall asleep, It still does not help.
      I remember about 1 dream every 2-3 days, sometimes I have 1 dream each night for a few days. So its very inconsistent. Is there any way for me to improve that? Since the DJ alone doesnt really do much for me.

      On a side note, I suffer from a genetic chronic depression but I DO NOT take any medication, if that could have any impact on recall.

      Please help. Oh and please dont go with something like "try to motivate yourself for it" because that doesnt work with my depression

      This is a little tricky, so here goes nothing.

      Well, first of all, dream recall can vary greatly, even if you are very advanced, you can have bad streaks of recall. I take it you've never had "good" recall, but it just comes easier to some people.

      Secondly, maybe your depression plays a role here. If we're talking about something genetic, maybe it's naturally more difficult for you than it is for other people, but maybe I'm completely wrong. Just take it easy.

      On to the actual advice. What kind of DJ are you using? I've found what works best for my recall is keeping a hand-written DJ, it's harder work than, say, a recorder, but for me having a physical DJ and being able to flick through it from time to time makes for great motivation.

      Also, I dunno if you've considered taking supplements. Other people might give better advice on this because I haven't experimented much, I know that taking vitamin B6 is supposed to give you a boost in recall. Give it a shot. Other lucid dreaming supplements (such as galantamine, if I'm not mistaken) also produce more vivid dreams and therefore better recall. Of course, you can't use these as often as the vitaminic supplements, but they could give you a jump start. Talk to your doc before taking these, though.

      What steps have you taken already to promote dream recall? Do you notice wakings throughout the night? How much do you sleep every night? Do you have a regular sleep schedule?

      Setting intention is more than just repeating a phrase to yourself. You have to feel how very important it (dream recall) is to you. It's like that feeling you get when you have an appointment you just can't miss in the morning, how you find yourself waking through the night to check the time.

      These things are I believe the most important:

      + notice at least one waking during the night before our final waking in the morning, where you can practice recalling dreams. The more, the better, since the more practice you'll get
      + reach for dream recall every time you find yourself awake, as the very first thing you do or think about
      + do not think about any waking life topics, worries, problems, to-do lists, etc. while in bed. Leave these for when you physically get out of bed
      + pay attention to all life experiences, and practice recalling them (review your day before bed in the evening). If you don't pay attention when awake, you won't be paying attention when you're asleep, and so there won't really be anything to remember.

      When you wake up, try to recall whatever you were just thinking about. This allows your criteria for recall to be as broad as possible.

      You want your criteria for recall to be broad as possible because the more specific it is, the more you're limiting yourself. For example, if upon waking up you only try to recall visual imagery, you're going to have difficulty recalling a dream which didn't contain any visual imagery.
