1: I have no idea.
2: I drew my avatar picture and shrank it and uploaded it to my website space. You could do that. If you haven't a website space, you can use photobucket or imageshack or simelar.
I beleive there is also a selection available from the forum, if you click the "show gallery" button at the bottom of the profile editing page.
