Whats happened to my sleep?

Hello

Before I had even heard about LD I always had pretty good dream recall and would have at least one dream I remember each night.

Ever since finding out about LD just over a week ago, I have had one extremly short LD, my first one, and now my dream recall is terrible! I have been keeping a dream journal but I cant remember any dreams.

I keep falling asleep too quickly aswell. I dont get a chance to try some techniques all the way through because ive falled asleep!!

I really dont know what to do, my life style is the same as it was before I started LD so I cant see why is all going wrong!?

I am very regular with going to sleep and never normaly have trouble waking up in the morning, but I have noticed that i have been waking up in the middle of the night (which I never used to do) Sorry this is starting to drag on....... Also I have hardly had any sleep paralysis since trying to LD. Could it be that since trying to LD is has thrown my sleep patterns right off course!

We all wake up during the night and morning - we just forget that we do. The fact that you're "noticing" this happening is proof that you're doing something right! It is at these "awakenings" that you're supposed to be recapping the dream that you were just in (maybe taking notes). Also, waking up during the night provides you with more chances to try techniques.

You may see all this as an inconvenience, but I think you're brain is behaving in a manner beneficial to practicing LDs! Try to embrace it and use it.

If it's starting to cause a problem with your daily life, I suggest just giving it all a rest for a while (no pun intended). Take a week off and enjoy regular "undisturbed" sleep. See if that snaps you back into your regular routine.

Ok, i never though of it that way. But i think the fact that I just though id woken up randomly for no reason and no had any dream recal that i thought there was a problem.

Well im pretty sure ill wake up tonight, so instead of rolling over ill try and stay awake for a bit and put some more dreams in my journal (if i remember them!) :shock:

Have you tried any of those meditation tapes at all? the brain wave beta theta things? Ive heard they are meant to enduce a deeper sleep?

Dream recall may swing in and out. Don't get discouraged. There is such thing as trying too hard. You want to practice the exercises but try not to put too much pressure on yourself. The more relaxed you are the more focused you will be.

You may also want to use those midnight awakenings to your advantage. I've found it helpful to get out of bed briefly when this happens. So you can grab a snack, check your email or whatever for about 15-20 minutes. This will help get your body more awake, so it will be easier to remain conscious. When you go to bed, tell yourself that you will have a lucid dream. Tell yourself that you will remember the dream in detail and you will write it down as soon as you wake up. Make sure to keep your dream journal close to the bed so you don't have to get up in the morning.

The fact that you had a LD in your first week is pretty impressive. That means you're definately doing something right. I'd say keep doing the exercises you have been and maybe check out some books on the topic. The best one, IMHO, is Exploring the World of Lucid Dreaming by Steven LaBerge. Other than that it just takes practice.

It sounds like you are making excellent progress, It takes some people months to have their first lucid dream. I wouldn't worry about this too much. Keep practicing whatever teqhniques you want to use for a few months, it just takes time thats all. You will probably find that in the following weeks your dream recall will sky rocket.
