this is a pretty old concept actually. jung's collective unconscious is similar to this idea, but i think more closely related it the notion of the "akashic records." cultures all over the world have been using dreams to obtain information that they could not have access to--of course, i'd imagine most people would deny the validity of these claims because they are not based on scientific evidence, just thousands of years of anecdotes. but if you read ethnographical literature you'll notice that ours is pretty much the only culture that no longer practices dreaming.
