Describing dreams as they occur

I recently began using a digital voice recorder to jorunal my dreams instead of writing them down. I found that I can describe them in much greater detail by doing it this way. Using this device gave me an idea.

If I told myself before I went to sleep "You will describe your dreams AS they happen", and I attained lucidity in my dream , then wouldn't I be able to describe (in the waking world) my dreams in some detail in real time as they happen? The cool thing is my voice recorder has a timer and it can record for several hours.

I realize this will not be easy, but I am willing to put in the time and effort because I think this could be something truly incredible.

Anyone have any suggestions as to how I could accomplish my goal?

Wait, sorry if I understood this wrong, but you want to record your dreams while you're asleep? That's what it seemed like from the post anyway...

So yeah, if you sleep talk naturally then it might be possible, though you'd be wasting a good lucid dream trying to do it.

People have told me that I talk in my sleep. I think being able to actually have some vivid detail recorded would be well worth "wasting" a lucid dream.

Wow that would be cool- you could send yourself a message from 'the other side'. You might learn a lot about how you think in lucid dreams, such as your emotions.

Yeah definitely. There's a vast amount of potential in this regard.

Sorry to burst your bubble, but AFAIK, talking durring sleep only occours durring the depest part of sleep. (alpha, beta, delta, theta... I can't remember which.) Durring REM, when you're dreaming, your body is paralyzed, so the only motions possible are autonomic functions, like breathing and blood circulation, and the movement of your eyes, obviously. You may be able to record yourself talking in your sleep, but it won't be while you're dreaming. There have been experiments done in which subjects used eye movents in a lucid dream to indicate the timing of events (left - right - left - right, up -down - up - down), but that's about the extent of willful output from the dream state. If you can prove me wrong, then go for it! I like being proven wrong.

Well, thanks for clearing things up. I really don't know that much about how the sleep cycle affects ones physiology. I have heard of sleep paralysis, and so you are probably right.

I was just thinking it would be amazing if this could actually be done.

I dont think im really "proving" you worng, but Ive had a few dream dreams where I actually remember doing something in my dream and was actually doing it when I woke up. Like one time a had a dream I was playing guitar and I actually woke myself up instantly and my hands were playing air guitar. I slept on the couch and so everybody there saw me doing that while I was sleeping. also ive had my alarm set to a radio station and rember singing in my dream and woke up to that song in the radio and I was mubbling the words.Ive also read a post about somebody on here try to talk in a dream but coulnt get the words and he was yelling and all that, and his wife said he was actually yelling in real life, or something like that. These arnt "scientific facts" but take them as you will .Anyways I dunno, it would be awesome if this could be done. Might just take a TON of work.

nah thats not true. i used to have recurring nightmares as a little kiddie where i would try to yell for my mom to help me, but all that would come out was a kind of mumbling. turns out i was hearing my real voice feeding back into my dream. also, i've had dreams recently where i yell something out of surprise and wake myself up by a single muffled word or exclamation. i think sleep paralysis works to prevent motion, but it's not totally effective...in fact, it IS possible to move during sleep paralysis, as that was the way that i got out of it the first few times i accidentally experienced it during WILD attempts.

I tried this for the first time last night. Before I went to sleep I told myself several times to talk out loud during my dreams. Here's what happened:

I had several dreams, and in each of them (in the dream itself) I whipped out a voice recorder and set it up to record. I noticed that I talked a LOT more in these dreams than I ever have before. I recorded from about 1am to 4:30am.

About 45 minutes in...This is what I recorded:

*A loud grunt*

*It sounds like I'm struggling*

"I want you to go like this. That's the...I'm not even gonna do anything, I'm just gonna go like this..I'm not gonna do anything, don't worry."

*Then*

"20 bucks says the guy who gets it doesn't..."

*That's what I got from last night*

There was some other stuff too, but it's nothing more than incoherent mumbling.

Only about the first 15-20 sec have me talking IIRC.


Now, as for dream recall, I do not remember ANY of what I said in the waking world in my dreams. Furthermore, I can't figure out what it relates to in those dreams.


Still, it's not bad for a first try!

I re-uploaded the file. It was incomplete, but now it is fixed.

I'm going to start cataloging each day's edited audio as well as the specific times when I talked. Over time I am confident that my ability to describe dreams in real time will flourish and evntually get to the point where I can verbalize in some detail the beauty of my dreams.

This is true, but its only the major, dangerous body functions that are paralysed! The ones affecting whether you walk off a cliff, or into a tar pit or whatever, but not the ones that as you say, move your eyes. You can still manage to move some of the main functions as well, to a very small degree, like finger twitching etc, which is a good way of conducting experiments, and I believe i remember is one of LaBerge's experiments proving lucid dreaming :P Since lungs and probably mouth still work, it might be possible to talk in a lucid dream or the likes, so who knows what ya might come out with! ^_^

I attained lucidity last night for the first time in a few weeks. Unfortunately I woke up shortly thereafter. Still, it's progress.

Also, I had a cd I made playing on loop for the whole night. It was an audio recording of me talking about some of my past experiences. It was quite amazing, because the audio was shaping the content of my dream. Often I couldn't hear DC's talking because my own voice drowned them out. Right before I became lucid, I took the headphones off (in the dream) and was able to hear.
