I wonder if Scientists could build a Dream Viewing machine..

It would probably be hard, but think about it this way.

If they can detect and record brain waves in present day science, then if somebody had the money and the manpower in the future, we could probably research how a brain "interprets" them during it's dream time (i.e. how a brain also sees hypnagogic images, and fully clear pictures in one's head) , and then construction of a facility that interprets brain waves into video and audio images can occur.

Anybody have any thoughts on this subject? I obviously don't have all the bases covered, but I guess it makes good conversation

Doubt it will ever happen. But if it did, I would tape every one of my dreams and then no one would need DJs anymore.

That'd be awesome. Especially since you'd be able to record your dreams and revisit them just as they occured. And seeing other people's dreams would be interesting. It'd also be of great help to psychologists and the like.

It'd also be risky business, because that would lead to mind-reading technology in general, and to more advanced hidden ways to read minds (like bugging people) for military purposes, etc. Think of the Patriot Act with that kind of technology. Scary stuff.

but we don't even have a machine that can record how a person sees in the first place! D=

we would first need that. Movies don't really represent how we see - movies are flat - our vision curves around us. Movies focus on the foreground or the background, but our eyes keep refocusing.

I think it would cool if we could see dreams via technology - but that technology has to first show we see in the waking world!

I agree with that. If you taped a dream it would HAVE to be in 3D and watched with goggles or something to place yourself in the dream or it would just be wierd. Not gonna happen any time soon though, I'm betting 50 bare minimum, 200 years 25% chance , most likely never. Never's probably best though, 'cause when you write a dream and go back to it you remember it basically like real anyways, and stuff like this could lead to mind bugging like someone else said...now wouldn't that suck/kill all our rights. It would be fun to see what politicians are really thinking though, If you ask me even the most honest lie about 5 times as much as the average person.

Although this would be entirely awesome I just do not see any way around the elusiveness of the consciousness.
It is not like a painting or something tangible. It is fleeting and ever changing. And on what level.
The MRI EEG & FMRI machines are only capable of detecting what areas of the brain are active during different events.
A Machine to record in any manner I do not foresee in the near future. But Hopefully I am wrong.
Technology is changing faster than my out look.
All It takes sometimes is the right breakthrough.

I'm sure something of the sort will be entirely possible in the future. We can't comprehend how it would work now because we don't have anything like it as of now to work from. With how our technology has been growing in the past 100 years (hell, even the last 20 years), I don't think that there is anything that will be impossible in the future.

For example, as I visited my homepage a couple nights ago, I was greeted by this headline:
      http://news.yahoo.com/s/afp/20060528/sc_af...ch_060528211158
      Something I never thought possible...

How could you cry for me?
Cause I don't feel bad about it.
      So shut your eyes,
      Kiss me goodbye,
      And sleep.
      Just sleep.

I hope they never make this, people reading my dream journal is already a risk I'm taking, having recordings of dreams would only make things more complicated.

On the point of Technology, think about it this way: It was only 15 years ago that we thought it impossible to have long term weather forecasts, but now we can depict what it would be like in a month's time with only a small margin of error. I believe in Japan they have created a super computer Earth, where it acts exactly like our planet, so what's to say they can't go about making video with depth perception that could also record brainwaves and turn them into audio and sound? I mean, Video and sound are on the rise, we've gone from Pong to (insert next generation console game with good graphics here) in the span of around 35 years!

We're on the uphill slope for the technology age, so who knows?

Whoa, that cloak things pretty cool (I read the article). Like I said, I definitely think it's possible to build a dream viewing machine, and it probably will happen sometime (a change from very unlikely in my last post), but that is one machine I sure as hell hope no one makes. It's scary enough with the CIA illegal wiretapping, and alll that stuff, and something that could view dreams could probably easily be made to read minds...And just thinking about that gives me shivers (and sickens me to my stomach), as if they could the government would DEFINITELY implement such technology.

Naw... considering this has been talked about 10,000 times before.

Anyways... you can blab about all your theories of how it could *potentially* work... but it'd probably be a bit more complicated... and also... if the weather forecasts are almost right a month in advance, why can't they accurately predict the weather in two days?

Yeah, Pong compared to the Nintendo Wii. Now that thing is amazing! (sorry, the anticipation is killing me.)

I'm sure it is going to be awhile before anything like this even begins to be produced. And even then, the technology would have to evolve enough to the point where us people interested in seeing our dreams would be able to afford it.

This all reminds me of an episode in Futurama when the main character is having a dream in the future where he is in an underwear commercial. It turns out that companies are able to send dream-ads into people while they're sleeping.
