Physical Pain in dreams?

Hi there.

We've all seen the matrix, and the idea that if you're killed whilst plugged in, you die in the 'real world'..

But don't you ever feel (what seems to be) physical pain when dreaming?
I have a few times..and although it has caused me no great harm..it makes you wonder..

On one occasion, i fell off a 100ft cliff, and instead of waking up just as i was about to hit the bottom, i hit it full force, and was subject to great pain. Within seconds the pain wore off and i was back on my feet.

I think it depends how lucid you are:

New Lucid Dreamer: Hurts a bit less than waking life. (At least it did last night :shock: )
Good Lucid Dreamer: You feel a sensation of pain, but its not quite pain.
Experienced Lucid Dreamer: No sensation.

I've only got that idea from what I've read, I'm still new. I'm guessing the reason why is because the more lucid you are, the more you realize it's not a real fall.

I duno man I have been Lding for a while pain is still pain to me. Its usualy what wakes me back up into my bed when I am in one of those dreams I cannot leave... Its not like a owie Icut my finger, it something a tad more traumatic.

It's an interesting question. I actually experienced a non-lucid dream last night where I had an accident with a motorcycle (how silly, I should have recognized I was dreaming, 'cause I don't know how to motorcycle in real life). In my dream I hit a concrete wall with my left leg and felt a sharp very painful sensation in my left leg. It awoke me a few seconds later and I was kind of shocked how painfult it actually was.

wow, glad you told me which leg the painful sensation was in, i would have never known. :roll:

anyway, yeah i believe it's possible to feel pain in dreams, i haven't had any extreme pain yet but i have felt a bit...

Check out My post in lucid experiences, The day the scientist went out to lunch one, the second dream in the first post, Fell off a big cliff, hit the ground, woke up in pain, fell back asleep at the base of the cliff still in pain... that was not a fun one.

Painful dreams? All the time... I used to just pull myself awake from these, but because it usually drains me so much to pull myself out of the dream (when I'm fully awake, I feel like I ran a marathon the day before because I wake up so groggy) I've learned to just continue the dreams and concentrate on healing myself instead. Lots of sword and knife fights and telekinesis involving spinning or flying blades. What frustrates me the most is I often conjure swords in order to defend myself against an attacker, but the more things I introduce/conjure, the more I am attacked (viciously slashed and cut in numerous places all over my body). What follows is a repetition where I go through periods of battle, then pain (as in major oozing cuts all over my body) followed by a retreat, followed by a healing time where I concentrate on breathing and regenerating, then back battle. This often continues until I eventually wake myself or subtly change the dream through prayer or song.

If I can find you I would try to teach you its just so hard pinpointing another individual..

I know swords... So much that it scares me, Ive only taken a bout 3 months of taekwondo and about a half year at Ia-do(japanese swordsmanship) Both of my teachers... I actualy had a Sensei... he was incredible.. He said that this was right for me, he actualy picked me out of the people browsing in the place he worked and said... I teach a class blah blah... and it was perfect..I seriously dont mena to brag... but I caught up with people that had been taking theclass for over a year in only a few weeks... And in taekwondo, a master asked to sparr with me, and we sparred for a few moments, but the moment he threw a kick i got him into a prone position, and could have decked him ( I didnt) and all the students said hey you cant do that!? That baffled me.. how could you teach a class and tell the students that attackers ONLY attack in one way....

WHoly crap im ranting... lol sorry folks!

Anyways, I can show you beam control, manipulation of matter on a small scale, and light focusing, and Swords, in the dream world.

So anyways... If I can find you I will teach you swords, My name is Serinanth. =) just ask I might show up, I seem to have a tendancy of doing that to people.

:wink: Well, I wrote this because some people claim that pain in dreams may be rather fuzzy and not well localized to a body part. :wink:

A Lost Soul

I fell off a building in the dream world when I was a teenager and I woke up with my head in a pool of blood. It's always comforting when your astral or dream self suffers pain and it carries over into your physical body. And yes, that was sarcasm.

Sometimes I experience pain in the Dreaming, and other times I don't. For instance, I had a dream in which someone shot me in the stomach and I felt it very vividly. I've had other dreams in which I am hurt somehow, but I don't feel anything. I would imagine that your mind uses what your body has previously experienced as a reference for dream pain, but then again I've never been shot before. And if getting shot feels anything remotely close to what I felt... wow, I just hope I don't go that way. If I do, it had better be right between the eyes, mob-style. 8)

-although I am lucid (near total dream recall and control of my own movements and intentions), I am not in control the attackers' actions. Like I said, it's worth it, to me, to continue in the dream even though it's negative because it 's too draining to try and wake up or to drastically change the setting. Usually when I feel overwhelmed, I just pray and am protected instantly (or the dream will change completely), or, if I am caught up in the frenzy of the moment -like being in the middle of a battlefield -I simply continue out of instinctual self defense. But I'm learning more and more that when I willingly continue a fight or even sometimes instigate the fights out of curiosity, I end up going through the vicious cycle I described above and I quickly get in over my head. True, a warrior does not intentinaly look for a fight, there are usualy much simpler solutions to a situation than drawing the sword. I offered, because I saw that you had said the dreams you would conjure a sword, so you might have an affinity to them.

At work I am a peer trainer, I had to take a class and one of the execises was to teach something you know how to do.. Ok I figured I would teach somone some of the basic stances and simple cutting forms of Ia-do.
I got laughed at of course...
somone said "Why the hell would you want to know how to use a sword, somone can just shoot you from a distance"
My reply was simple, "Shooting somone does not take that much skill (we arent talking sharphooters here, they are incredible!!) you point and pull a trigger. Learning the sword you find focus, the effeciency of proper form, strength of spirit and body, and confidence in self."

He didnt have a witty reply...
My partner taught me how to wrap the handle of a hockey stick, which I ued on my Bokken =) hehe (couldent bring my real one der) so it worked out nice.

Well anyways, I just wanted to say that Im not some barberous oaf that runs around wielding his sword hacking anything up in his way... I would much rather find a peacefull solution but when some demonic wraith that just tore apart somone standing next to you....

That would cause all kinds of problems, people today would be all stupid about it and you know it :? Which sucks because I wouldent mind it myself...
If it were to ever happen but I doubt it, I would hope that only those skilled with the blade could carry, Like a gun it is not too hard to disable your target instead of killing them if you know what your doing.

And would require some kind of psych evaluation, are you some nutball that just wants to look cool by wearing a sword, or are you a detective, security personel, although many of them are not allowed to carry guns why would they be allowed to carry swords, are you in a bad area, trying to protect yourself... you would need a reason, just like a gun
.. I dont see why not, though unlike a gun it is not hidden at all, it would be like carrying around a shotgun, it would deter people from messing with you, Or in certain places provoke them into messing with you because your the big bad man with a sword.. yada yada yada...
Its also much more personal... MUCH more especially if your oponnent has a sword as well, many would not be so inclined to do battle, guns make things easier, much more detached....

I don't think I've ever felt physical pain in a dream. I usually feel a bizarre and uncomfortable tingling sensation, along with a surge of heat in the area where there should be pain.

For me, the feeling's usually also rather unspecific, like you said. Therefore, I was very much surprised from that motorcycle accident dream last week.

The first time I remember feeling intense pain (before this one the only pain I felt was kind of like icedawg's -like a sensation of heat or pressure and that's it) in a dream was about six years ago. I remember having a dialog with someone or something and I had this acute feeling or sense that it meant me harm, so I was somewhat afraid of it. I couldn't see anything -pitch black, but I could feel my body -kinda like floating in a black liquid or in warm water in the dark... Anyway, sometimes when I feel threatened in my dreams, but I can't pinpoint the threat, I will converse with it or challenge it. Well... I challenged it saying something to the effect of "you can't hurt me. I dare you to hurt me" Almost instantly I felt something like claws or spikes being driven into my head. Of course it scared me so much I woke up and needless to say I haven't been as foolish since, but still experience all kinds of pain from being shot, hit and stabbed, burned and frozen...
