Can anyone tell me how they get ready to "sleep", as I have some trouble in this area.
oh, and also, off topic: what is the "scout" technique?

I'd give you a fortune for reveling my the mystery of falling asleep the moment my head touches the pillow. So many sleepless nights I've got, who would ever count them...
Try imagine a song in your head. Not any words, just piano, symphonic and stuff like that. Don't struggle to imagine it, but make sure you "hear" it all the time. Don't try to clear your mind, don't think "I am doing this to fall asleep" just do it. It's pretty hard, but it works well for me :)
What might also help you relax (I just recently discovered it works for me) is,
If you have an ipod (the headphones work really well, I guess others could too) put on your favorite song and listen to the instruments (the music doesn't need to be loud but for ipod headphones if you aim them in your ear it should be clearer and feel like you are "there"). I find this relaxing and it helps me go to sleep.
As for sleeping on command, I have yet to do it.
I do physical Relaxation and then Energy raising if I'm planning on lucid dreaming. After the energy raising if I'm tired I'd fall right asleep.
Chronic sleep deprivation works well for a good night's sleep but not so good for lucid dreaming.
I read. I read until I can't keep my eyes open anymore. Then I put my book down and drift away quickly. I've been reading consistently for years just before bed. I can't imagine not being able to read before I sleep. Gonna suck when I have to give it up during basic training. I find the best reading to be fantasy and science fiction because your reading something that is almost a dream world. I would love to be able to jump into some of the stories I read.
try sitting in an uncomfortable chair or someting fro a while, then go imediatly into bed(which should be comfortable)
also, food with tryptophan
for autosuggestion, google someting called autogenics (good for WILDing too)
or, go to your local pharmacy and pick up som emelatonin. Like 5 mg per pill. Melatonin is the chemical your body makes naturally that makes you go to sleep. It is posible that you have a defiency
peace
It depends for me on how qiwckly I let my mind go off randomly
I usually make up scenarios in my head. I'd imagine myself doing something I really want for example. The first night it takes a long time to go to sleep (I'm excited to think out the ENTIRE scenario, but if the second night you're going to make up your same favorite scenario, you fall asleep sooner (you've already done it, so it's less interesting.
I used to have trouble sleeping, but not anymore :)
You know, that actually seems to work for me too (though I never realized it), I sometimes unconsciously do it, and the first night I just can't fall asleep, but then the next it's easier since I've already played it out. You may be onto something, I'll give it a try. Any scenario ideas though?
Well, for people who are having trouble getting to sleep, I'm going to give the same advice I always give:
- Don't drink coffee or caffeinated drinks. Caffeine screws with you.
- Stay away from junk food and stuff with sugar in. Especially soft-drinks! Chocolate, etc, also. Sugar screws with you. This goes not just for before bed, but the whole day. Keep your junk food intake to an absolute minimum!
- Get some exercise mid-afternoon. This will help immensely.
- Regularise your sleep schedule. Go to bed and wake up at the same time, or close to, every night throughout the week.
- Have a hot shower or bath before bed.
Diet, exercise, and sleep schedule have a MASSIVE effect on how easy it is to get to sleep, and the quality of sleep too.
Every night just as I put my head on the pillow, I press play on my stereo and play a classical music CD. ATM it's Mozart, and has been for a while.
Works great, because after a while it becomes a trigger for your mind, and you feel like its sleep-time.
There are also several studies that tout classical music as being healthy for the brain, that probably has something to do with it.
Hypnosis would work, Im sure that you could find a file about it on www.warpmymind.com if there isnt then try to email one of the people that make the files.
Hypnosis actually isn't screwing with your head, trust me, I really don't like people or stuff screwing with me either, head or body!
I've experienced hypnosis myself and I can tell you what it's like:
it's relaxing, you're completely aware of everything because you're still awake (and you knw that you are awake). You consciously process everything the other person says and you will never (NEVER) do anything you don't want to, since YOU control what you do, not the one helping you get into a very relaxed state (since that is all he (or she) does).
All those things you see on tv: FAKE! You don't get stronger when hypnotized, you won't go acting like a monkey and you will comletely remember everything, because you're awake all the time and completely conscious and in control, you can quit whenever you want.
I hope I made clear that hypnosis is just a state of deep relaxation, and that nobody can screw with your head!
good luck sleeping
When I try to fall asleep, I just relax.
Recently, when I tried to learn to WILD, I had problems with falling asleep - trying to stay conscious kept me awake, so I tried to relax more and I kept falling asleep so fast I couldn't even realize that I'm falling asleep... Just relaxing, but relaxing very, very much is for me very good way of falling asleep.
I relax usually by letting my mind wander or playing a song in my mind, or I'm just trying not to be concentrated on anything.
Start doing a regular routine of tasks or feel good things before bed so that it calms you down and after it has been established will put you to sleep.
Eg. Drink a glass of milk with a cookie whilst reading your favourite magazine. Then Brush your teeth. And then Go STRAIGHT to bed and switch the light off. this will associate the tasks with bed time do the same thing EVERY night before bed.
Hope this helps :)
it helps me to have a bedtime routine
When I go to sleep, I just sort of try to "feel" my way into sleep.
Like, I lie down (usually on my side, or at least with my head on its side on the pillow), and then, after relaxing a bit (just thinking about anything, but not too hard), begin. I just imagine myself 'rolling' into sleep or 'spinning', 'flipping', etc. I haven't had a WILD before, but sometimes when I sleep as I enter sleep I get those sensations. Then I just will them to happen, and it seems to help me sleep.
Anyway, that's just my way for getting to sleep. But I need to think enough about the days concerns first or else they'll bug me and I'll never sleep! :D
I've recently had some success with a certain method, but it's only for relaxing ones mind. If your body isn't letting you sleep (i.e. restless leg syndrome) then I don't know any solutions.
If you have a racing mind, try thinking about random thoughts as fast as you can... it's kinda hard to explain. For instance:
CHERRIES! Cherries go great with ice cream. Cats like cream. Dogs hate cats. I have a dog. I've had two dogs in my life. Two is a number. Math is hard. Wood is hard. Buildings are made of wood. I live in a building. The building is on concrete. The Romans invented concrete. There are "Roma" tomatoes.... etc... etc....
I know this might sound silly, but instead of trying to think of "nothing", thus focusing on the fact that you cannot sleep, try keeping your mind SO occupied with random gibberish that you finally let go of your worries.
The biggest problem with sleeping for many has GOT to be worrying about sleep itself. If you can think about ANYTHING else, it's almost guaranteed to help. Let your mind go nuts!
sleep on comand....
Ive heard of this, I think its a natural thing though, I highly doubt you can learn it.
