Basically my whole reason for scoping out a site to post on was because of weird experiences when falling asleep. But to set that up, I'll explain a little bit so I don't bore you out of reading my experience to hopefully explain some of it.
I started meditating and hypnotizing myself about 7 years ago. I have had a few spontaneous Lucid Dreams when I was younger, but I thought they were just lucky and random. The more I started meditating/self-hypnosis, I began to have them more often and was able to control them and concentrate enough to stay Lucid for longer periods of time, being able to do what I guess is the basic stuff, i.e.: Flying, defying gravity in ways, walking into different rooms and be in a completely different location for instance.
However the last few years I haven't been meditating at all, yet when I go to sleep, I often find myself conscious and aware of falling asleep. On these times when I notice that I'm falling asleep, everything becomes VERY LOUD. It's really odd, because when falling asleep you'd think when losing yourself to sleep things would become quieter as you lose focus on the outside world and your awareness focuses internally. I have to have some type of background sound to sleep, so I usually sleep with my fan on. And for several years now, as I fall asleep and things grow louder, the sounds also change. The strangest sound is that of the fan, because before it was a steady whirring sound that a fan typically makes. But the closer I get to unconsciousness, the fan changes to a slower rythmic sound. The best that I can think of to describe it would be what a helicopter blade would sound like as it slows down. You just hear pulses of wind rushing instead of a steady whirr, if that makes any sense at all.
This actually gets pretty unsettling and usually shakes me back to full awareness. Just because it's VERY loud as if it were right up against your ear, and it's completely changed it's sound. However, a few times I am able to keep calm and let it go further, and then the sounds change again. The fan will kind of fade out, and then I'll hear a sound that sounds like a flashback scene from Lost. I know how stupid that sounds, especially because of it's popularity, but I think a lot of people may be able to understand what I mean when I compare it with that because it IS popular now and you may be able to notice it if you watch Lost. Before Lost came out however, I mentally compared the sound to when the Jedi used the force in the new Star Wars series. Now, I'm not saying that I think the Force is acting upon me, just want to get that out there. Just trying to give you an idea of what it sounds like. Wow, this paragraph makes me sound incredibly weird.
So...here comes the part that has only happened to me once. And I think it's only because I was so incredibly tired I just let the whole effect continue and didn't allow the strange sounds to unsettle me so much that I woke up. This one time, just a few weeks ago, I actually stayed conscious all the way into a Lucid Dream. From my head touching the pillow, to the sounds getting louder, through the fan getting loud and making a pulsating sound, then beyond that everything goes completely silent and then I was in a dream. I'd say maybe a total of 10 minutes elapsed from the time I went to bed then fell asleep. I realized I was in a dream, just a random dream, nothing that had any familiarity or resemblence to any other dream I've had, just a random dream but I was immediately Lucid, conscious the entire time. I could only maintain it for a few minutes though, probably just the surprise at what had happened.
So that's the first time in all my years of doing this that that has ever happened. I was wondering if this is common, or happens fairly often, and if you can even get so much control that you do it consistently?
