I’ve read a lot on this board in the last couple of days. I was wondering why so much emphasis is put on CONTROLING dreams. It seems to be a badge of honor (literally) among this board to be able to control your surroundings in a dream.
I was wondering why that is?
I have only had a few lucid dreams but I’ve had them all very recently and I have varying degrees of control in each one, but I feel, and this is only a feeling, that it is important to try to understand what our dreams are telling us. I feel like the more control you exert onto a dream the less of your subconscious can come through.

I could be wrong, but I don't think that people who have achieved dream control are seen as having "badge of honor"...but rather having achieved a higher plateau, so to speak...but it certainly is quite a leap to have made. In achieving that, they certainly can offer information and guidance to those looking to achieve this level, such as I.
Speaking only for me, I haven't gotten the impression that anyone elevates themselves to a "better" level because they have reached certain stages that others have yet to reach, and thus far they have been very helpful in trying to assist others in obtaining this level.
Although I'm trying to achieve DC ability, I do agree that it is is important...at least for me...to allow your subconscience to "speak" to you, as I wrote in the following thread:

LDing is a very personal experience and I don't believe there is any right/wrong or superior/inferior hierarchy or class.

I suppose there's a lot of emphasis on control because its fun, but to me its definitely not the ultimate measure of a great Lucid Dream.
Personally, I rate "going with the flow" way above dream control. My favourite thing to attempt in a Lucid Dream is to explore, without interfering. I follow a dream character home to see how they live, I find out what stuff smells like, I go open that door over there, or I just continue through the story, all the time aware that I'm dreaming.
This is harder to do (for me at least) than dream control, because I'm much more likely to get sucked into some scenario and lose Lucidity. But for me its also the most rewarding thing to do. :)

I don't believe every single dream we have has some deeper meaning - therefore, especially when you're lucid, you can take advantage of the situation and have some fun! :D
