I've found a couple of interesting links. I havent done extensive research tho, but they look promising.

looks like my electronics knowledge will not be sufficient to build something like that.
Yeah I thought about trying to build a timer triggered blinking LED device, but I don't know if I could do it.
Hey, that could work!
I would not know because I do not have any myself. But I do not recall anyone who has said those deeces are anything but a scam No?
For $20 bucks what do you really have to lose.
uve got the chance of losing $20........i prefer to spend it on red bull...drink all of them then mediatate..what a mission that would be
I've just finished a more in depth look at the one in the first link. Yes, it will work. Not too difficult to build.
But it should be just as easy to build this unit using OP-Amps. I've got to give it a little thought. Let me throw out the basic idea and all you electronics weenies can think about it and maybe improve on it.
On one eye: (eyes move in tandem, so you don't need to track both):
Detection circuit consist of an IR LED as a light source and an IR sensitive photo-transitor.
The photo transistor drives the input of a peak detector made from one OP-amp. As the eyes move, the waveform changes and peaks are detected.
The output from the peak detctor feeds into a simple RC network. As more eye movements occur, the cap. charges. A large bleeder resistor will be placed across the cap to slowly discharge it when you are not in REM.
The cap. is connected to another OP-Amp configured as a threshold detector. When the threshold voltage is reached, it enables a 555 timer to flash the red LEDs
Parts:
2 - 741 op-amps
1 - 555 timer
1 - IR LED
1 - OR phototransistor
2 - Red LED
2 - potentiometers (for peak circuit, and threshold detect circuit)
a handful of caps, resistors, and diodes
So whadda you guys think? dougdrums?
Doesn't sound any cheaper or eaiser to build than the micro-controller one. But, alternatives are always good.
That's an awesome idea seeker, I'll see if I can make up some schematics for that.
Then you can market them here and charge $40 for each and save people like 200 bucks from that crappy novadreamer...(not crappy but pissed off its so expensive)
So I guess the most expensive part of the nova dreamer is the REM detector...
Well this is only $9.00

"Infrared reflective light sensor for Handy Cricket. Works best at a distance of about 0.4" (1 cm) from a surface. Transmit a small beam of invisible infrared light and measures the amount of light that is reflected back into the sensor. Also is sensitive to ambient light; to measure just reflectivity, shield the sensor from ambient light."
Works at about 3/8 inch from the surface it's detecting, sounds like it could work.
I found it at http://www.gleasonresearch.com/prod.php?sku=CX-IR-REFL
Would that work for REM detectors? :? whoa then it might just actually be worth assembling one yourself.
Well, anything that induces something that happens naturally just as easily seems like a bit of a waste of money to me. The last thing you want is to become dependent on something to become lucid in dreams. You can easily get them without any meditating, taking drugs, using devices. Just get a good nights sleep every day and you are fine.
^ what he said
It seems a tad ironic to me, Paperdoll, that you seem to be the most anti-post-whore one here and you indulge in making posts like the one ^ above
Anyway I was always interested in making my own mask with flashing lights but now I have learnt that I am epileptic I have a rather grounded fear that wearing such a thing will kill me, or at least put me into god-knows how many seizures every night. This has really put me down because it really was a good way to become lucid, and the only one I fear I have the dedication to follow. With a mask, I will be lucid much more often, and it would be great.
Oh well  .

I agree that if you can get lucid dreams from a good nights rest, then there's no need for devices or medicines.
But thats not always so clear cut.
EG
1) If you CAN'T seem to get lucid at all... then what?
2) What if you have sleeping disorders and can't get a good nights sleep. Then certain natural drugs might be necessary. Eg. Melatonin.
As it is Melatonin sounds like a miracle drug.
Yeah I know : 'If it sounds too good to be true.. blah blah'
BTW, if anyone is curious a good site for Melatonin info is http://www.melatonin.com/melatonin-faq.htm#SIDE
Unfortunately a good nights rest for me is seldom found; by the way, what is the best dose of melatonin to take. Whats the cheapest place to buy it? Can I buy it in my local health store in the UK, you think?
I'm sure you're local health store will have it.
Not sure on the price variations however.
I started last night with a 3mg dose. Its actually recommended you start with 1.2mg because even 1.0mg is a whole lot more than your body would ever produce in a night.
Unfortunately.. the results last night are skewed due to my similar inability to get a good bloody nights rest with cats and wife causing havoc.
Besides I need to give it a few days before I judge it.
Needless to say, my experiement with VILD last night was a failure because of this.
Does that ehe "equipment" actually works?
Anyone who have tried it?
I don't do it often.Quote:

^ Oops you did it again.... you played with my heart, got lost in the game, OOO Baby baby...
erm.....I am so so so sorry for that, I must hurt myself for posting that.
*punches himself it the face, really, not just writes it*
...god that's so pathetic.
I know it is, that is why I literally almost gave myself a black eye...only I hit myself in the cheek and not the eye cause I'm not that dumb...
