I know there has been alot of posts about marijuana and its effect on sleep. I smoke fairly often in the past and beleive it does have a negative impact on dreaming and recall so I have stopped for a bit. However, im curious how long do you need to have the drug out of your system before your you can dream properly again. Like if I were to smoke in the afternoon and have it well worn off by the time I go to bed, would it still have an impact on REM sleep and my dream recall?

Hmm I want more LD's yet pot isn't an option for me unfortunately :( I wouldn't know where to go :)
I've never once had a lucid dream when I was stoned the previous day. Actually, I'd rarely remember any dreams. After waiting maybe 2-3 days w/o smoking, I'm able to remember my dreams again. And for the next few days after that, my dreams actually seem longer and more vivid.

My guess would be you could still a lucid dream after smoking around bed time but it would be very very hard. - although some people say it helps with WILD.
Only smoking in the afternoon would be much easier to achieve one.
The next night near off fine unless your a heavy smoker.

But the only sure way unless a study comes out or you find one, is not smoke for a month or stop smoking altogether. But for me I would say I could smoke in the afternoon and possibly go lucid that night, but the next night I would be near off back to normal if not being a heavy user.
I used to be a chainsmoker of both dope and cigarettes. When I stopped. within a week my LD exploded... both my control and clarity went off the scale.
Good news then, sounds like there's a definite relationship between dropping the stuff and LD's. You'd think it would be th other way around.

Not my experience at all. Either I'm so natural that I can break through the "block" - or not everyone is "blocked" by it.
That's really shitty. I love Marijuana's psychological effects on my body, but I guess I'm gonna have to give it up for a while if I truly want to attain Lucidity.Quote:

i quit for like 2 months before i started having vivid dreams again and recall : / but it was worth getting off it for the time, got so many lucids i was a little scared to go to sleep in those days.... but i am thinking of giving up again! just for the thrill :P

"Two questions dealt with the effect of marijuana on recalled dreaming. "My dreams are more vivid if I go to bed stoned" is common (23%, 18%, 23%, 16%, 12%), but its opposite, "My dreams are less vivid or forgotten if I go to bed stoned" (23%, 27%, 21%, 7%, 13%) occurs about as frequently. Both effects have the same distribution of minimal intoxication levels (7%, 18%, 28%, 9%, 2% and 11%, 23%, 17%, 10%, 3%, respectively). Thus the effects of marijuana on the dreaming process must be modulated by immediate situational and psychological factors rather than dosage per se. Heavy Total users rate Fairly/Strongly and Very Strongly/Maximum about equally for less vivid dreaming, while Low and Moderate Total users peak sharply at Fairly/Strongly (p <.05)."
The percentiles are in order of number of votes for "Strongly Disagree, Disagree, No effect..." etc. It seems to be spread out pretty evenly.
i used to smoke weed heavily. i mean a LOT. i have noticed time and again. that after smoking. you need to go to sleep at least once, and then not smoke the next day, and you will start dreaming again.
I've read about something called REM rebound that is apparently common with drugs that decrease the length/frequency of REM. Its basically that your REM periods increase in frequency as well as length when the drug wears off, almost like your body trying to catch up on REM sleep. I'd assume that by "when the drug wears off", it would mean the effects from the last time used taper off, not when the drug completely leaves the body, but im not positive. I have a friend who smokes almost every day and says that he always remembers very vivid dreams from the early morning hours of sleep, and this seems to me to be evidence towards REM rebound occurring only after effects from the most recent smoke are tapering off. But like a few other people have said, everyone is affected differently by chemicals. If you really care a lot about lucid dreaming, i would at least tone the smoking down to a couple times a week if not less. And honestly, weed gets pretty boring when overused (abused) anyway in my opinion

A more correct statement, in my opinion, would be "you must correct any bad cannabis smoking habits (such as quantity problem, quality problem, or cut-off time problem) which are causing you to have poor dream recall and other sleep-related problems." There is a right way and a wrong way to use cannabis.
If you are smoking up until bedtime (you're still stoned or high when you lay down), this is no good. There is a definite cut-off time that you shouldn't smoke after if you want to enhance dream vividness/recall. This time is usually about ~3 hours before you go to bed. For example, my usual bedtime is 10pm. I make sure I don't smoke any cannabis past 7pm (or I take my last hit at 7pm). I am a very light smoker (only around ~3 hits daily, all vaporized).
Smoking past this cut-off time can have negative consequences on sleep. Other peoples' cut-off times may be different, though. It just takes self-control to make yourself stop smoking at a certain time every day.
Also, simply smoking too much cannabis throughout the day (quantity problem) is a common error. Keep your tolerance as low as possible. When I vaporize a single, tiny hit (<.05g), I get as high as I want to be. People always act like having low tolerance means you're "noob," but in my opinion it takes a seasoned veteran to perfect the art of keeping a low tolerance while continuing to smoke daily. This maximizes the potential of your stash, saves a lot of money, and is also healthier for your body/mind. Also, I'm not 100% sure about this, but I think you can also have problems when you smoke low-grade cannabis (quality problem).
Smoking bowls/joints/blunts throughout the course of your day is certainly bad for dreaming. A good goal would be to not take more than 1 hit per ~4 hours. After attaining that goal, a new goal could be to reduce the size of hits taken until your tolerance has been sufficiently lowered. This is all coming from personal experience and observing others. I still have loads of fun smoking cannabis (mainly because I don't overuse it), but I do it intelligently so that it enhances my life instead of hindering it.
Personally, after improving my "smoking strategies," I have had increased recall/vividness. In fact I have better recall/vividness now than I ever did sober. I can't say this will work for everyone though; this is just me sharing my personal testimonial.
when atemptingg to WILD, is it ok if i move my eyes around while there closed??? or would that just keep my body awake??
