If you are referring to a true relationship between two people, then I would have to say no. In my personal opinion, dream characters aren't real people. They have no mind of their own. Their mind is your mind. However, I think you can develop innocent friendships and companionships with them. Of course that is only my opinion and other's view on the subject will vary depending on how they view dream characters and essentially dreaming in general.

if your in love with a DC, aren't you just inlove with yourself basically. Assuming there are no shared dreams.

Seeing as a DC is a representation of a personality, I'd say falling in love with a DC is a sign of what one is looking for in a companion. If the DC exists in real life, or if there's a real person similar to that DC, I'd say it's as real as dreaming about one's wife/husband/lover. As real as a dream can be!

I have a particular DC which I'd be very interested in, should she exist in waking life.

I have one who represents a real person. While I'm not in love with her, I could certainly see it being possible to fall in love with some one (the real person) who manifests in your dreams often enough in the "proper" ways. Either way, I could imagine becoming very much emotionally attached - in some way - to a given DC if they were a regular cast member.

No, at least i dont think so. Next time your lucid, go to a DC and ask them a question you dont know see what happens. You'll be surprised.

And im not sure if i love the DC. but i definately like her way more than a friend. I cant wait to see her again, but in a lucid!

I'd have to agree with Elwood. While every character that you see is created by your mind, and therefore is constructed by all of your experiences and all the contents of your own self, they are not necessarily simply yourself with another face.

I think that we have to give the human mind and human creativity a little more credit. Look at writers. They create a whole cast of characters from their own imaginations. Everything a character says or does or feels is a product of the author. They have no true autonomous existence. And yet, authors often talk about their characters as if they were people outside of themselves. They have villains that they hate, heroes that they love, and often their characters do things, and take their stories in directions the authors did not quite predict.

So, in my opinion, while DCs are products of your own imagination, they are not necessarily yourself (though they can be); rather, they are your mind modeling another human being, your mind trying to create someone else. Such a creation will always fall short of the real thing, but as far as simulations go, they can come pretty close.

So, I would think that it is entirely possible to fall in love with a realistically created DC, and to carry on a relationship with them (humans are capable of amazing and bizarre things). But, an emotion/relationship going beyond "dream love"--that is, a real, abiding, love--of a DC would probably not be healthy. Just like you can love the characters in your favorite novel, feel a connection with them, but if you get to the point where you love them like you might love a real person, where you care about them as much as--or more than--you care about real people, I would think that you would need to re-examine your priorities and back off a little on the fiction.

      Just some thoughts.

I had a dream awhile back where there was this girl I was in love with, in a serious relationship. In the dream, I remembered past dreams I had has of her (I was lucid, but focused soley on her), and all the things we had done together. I felt absolutely AWFUL for having forgotten about her.

I'm pretty sure I didnt just make up those remembered dreams of her on the spot, that I've been dreaming about her for a long time, and I'm actually living another life with her in my sleep.

Mark Twain was convinced some of his dreams were real, and had an ongoing relationship with a DC he detailed in his book, "My Platonic Sweetheard".

... I think this stems from your own lack of a real girlfriend...

      -

I think its absolutely possible, not a very good idea... but possible. You can be in love with anything, and since your subconscious knows you better than you do, it could easily make your perfect woman. Though, I'd say that a REAL companionship would be WAY better than a fake one... at the end of the day, you'll still be alone...

Of course you can fall in love with a DC. You can kiss your monitor with a pic of your secret love. But will that do you any good? You can fall in love with a brick if you want... But remember, dreams are very great for a lot of reasons.. But a relationship in a dream is just not good. Youre not even asleep most of the time to be with your DC love.
