I wasn't too sure where to post this... lucid discussion, or extended discussion? I'm happy for mods to move it.

I've been thinking about this for a while and I've been meaning to post it here. For me, at least, thinking back into my past, it's not that hard to mistake it for a dream. I've found that a lot of times I've mistaken past events for dreams, and vice-versa. But the thing that seperates dreams from real life is the present - look around and take in your surroundings. Everything is so vivid and real, there's no denying that you're living in reality. But think back to a distant event, a hazy memory. In terms of reality, it's very different. The present is what seperates real life from the dream world.
But what about lucidity? Does this not create a parallel with the real world? In real life we have the present, but in dreams we have lucidity - where everything is so much more vivid and real. Is there really that much difference between the two?
I'd really like to hear people's opinions on this.

      Thanks.

I think there is another major differernce that seperates the two. In real life, we have memories of past events, people, places, etc... But in Dreams, we only have what is there right now, hardly ever do we have memories of the people and places. That is the key difference bewteen both "realities"

Me too, a lot these days...

I'm not so sure about that....Recently I've found out that plenty of my dreams were related (but had nothing to do with events occuring in my life), like I would find someone I met in a dream...
As for the difference between LDs and reality, i'd say that length, perception and control are the main differences...

I agree with krookedking - memories can occur in dreams.

I always have memories in dreams, both of real and unreal events. I even remember other dreams in dreams. I routinely "know" people and have a lifetime of memories and familiarity with them... until waking.

I think about this a lot. Everything exists as a memory. The only reason Reality seems so real all the time is it is a constant feed, so to speak. Inside the dream it is so real! But when you wake up it is only a memory. Some memories are more vivid than others. But the difference between Lucid Dreams, and Reality, is one needs you to sustain it, and the other doesn't.
EDIT: And yes I have had fake memories in dreams a lot. Even in low-level lucid dreams. Moslty in normal dreams though. I had one last night, where I suspected I was dreaming, but then I got a fake memory that confirmed that it was real. Oops, it wasn't!
I had a strange dream last night...
