What is a "HEALTHY MIND"?

I was chatting with a friend recently about licid dreaming, at a point in our conversation we came into a "sex in dreams" topic and a "violence in dreams" topic as well, after this i told him that i had read in a book that to successfully have LDs one must have a healthy and clean mind. I asked my self and then him if this meant that one should hold himself back from violent movies or sports or videogames, sex, pornography and things like that....
I just haven't been able to answer my own Q....what is a "HEALTHY AND CLEAN MIND"????? :(

i try not to limit myself with anything in dreams. but a healthy and clean mind.. well thats personal to everyone. this could get turned into a religious thing... just think of it this way. do you feel alright with sex and violence and stuff? if you do, then what the hell? but if you feel something is bad about it, stay away if you want. but i dont know if there is a general rule for a clean healthy mind. surely there are some things that can permanently damage your brain, but not many.

Totally i feel that, and i think about that all the time you know, sometimes i feel like if i try to have sex in a dream GOD will take away my abilities to Ld i dont know why, i mean i believe in god but i guess its like a subconsious paranoia

That's just crap, in my opinion. Lucid dreaming is about losing inhibitions and being free to do what you want. It shouldn't matter that much as to what level of "health" your mind is in.

Otherwise, your question is very subjective. It depends on the morals of the person in question.

Take a look through some of the (excellent) dream journals here - you'll find that "healthy and clean mind" by any definition has nothing to do with lucid abilities. Diligence and discipline are what you need.

In my humble opinion, having a "healthy and clean mind" by whatever YOUR definition of that may be is just part of living well - and being relaxed and stress-free seems to have a definite correlation for many to having lucids.

A healthy and clean mind, is a a mind without any (serious) mental dissorders and/or a mind without any acids (LSD) or other drug like stuff inside. IE. smoking pot/marijuana/hash/cannabis will only decrease your chances of becomming lucid. Ofcourse, if you're a weed-smoker, you will only decrease your chances, if you smoke right before sleep. Stuff like LSD, shrooms and all that stupid stuff will, apart from destroying you completely, decrease your chances ALOT.

Sex, sport, violence and all that stuff are just daily stimuli. They do not decrease your chances, they actually make your chances bigger. Everytime you do something, you feel something. The more you feel, the more do you know how real the world feels, and if you know how the real world feels, you can tell it apart from the dream world.

Agree completely with pj, it has no bearing on lucid ability.
Having mental health issues may well affect lucid abilities but im not a doctor so i couldnt say. As for the dirty part, what is a dirty mind, if you mean free from thoughts of sex and a virgin to violence then.... thats just not human :P

:shock: So in personale definitions WHAT IS A HEALTHY MIND? like what is your deffinition. Well for example mine NOW is just not being stressed and chilling often and on command, can anyone volunteer a personal opinion of a healthy mind? :wink:

If you want my opinion, i think there is no such thing as a typical healthy mind we should all strive to get, yeah, we have to have these things like sex because they stimulate our brain, make us feel good, i'm not saying that if there was no sex that life would be dull but we have lived to depend on such pleasures in life, our brain can't live without some of these features in life, getting rid of them would be like quitting smoking, very hard. I think a healthy mind consists of your likes, vanquishing the dislikes is the key to having a healthyu mind, too much stress can really get to our brains, we get distracted. Don't listen to the people who say that a healthy mind is not thinking about sex or violence, a healthy mind is what you think i a healthy mind, what your happy with, don't live the norm, be different! I know i try to be :)

thats crazy, yeah i just had my 6th LD...(yay) and i believe all it took was no stress, i mean yesterday my ipod got stolen, i got a shitty haircut, missed my bus..its sucked but i was able to set those things aside...
i think NOW i know what a Healthy mind is..

Clarity and Control I would say are elements of a healthy mind. These can be somewhat sacrificed for Creativity but the first two are what enable lucid dreaming I believe.

As far as doing things in lucid dreaming that will enable future L.D's, I would say meditating or focusing on a single point allows me to be MUCH more focused and aware the next day. I think Clarity and Control are definitely my own biggest barriers to LD's.

Yeah i heard that Meditation is a huge gelp for LDs, ive tried it but i dont do it that much cuz i live in a crowded house and everyone makes fun of me cuz i kinda look silly while meditationg :oops:

haha.. I've been meditating on my roof lately and its great! I enjoy it much more outside because when I focus my vision on a single leaf, the rest of the leaves look brilliant in the wind! Anyway, I was also trying to say that meditating during a lucid dream is probably the best thing you can do for you mind while in a dream. The rare times I've done it make the next day amazing!

So lett them make fun of you and pretend that they are you making fun of you. Meditation is not restricted to any area or position. Use imagination to make you feel the way you need to feel. I meditate all the time. I view life as one long, changing meditation exercise. Peace of mind opens doors and beeing able to keep peace of mind while in the middle of a storm you can have some massive, epic lucid dream experiancess.

A trick I like to use in meditation and life is not to identify my thoughts with my body. instead of thinking: "I want to go home". it thinks: "You want to go home" refering to the body as a "you". the body referes to the mind as "it" as the mind has no limits in what it can be. Body and mind is comunicating all the time and it is easy to mix up what is what. This simple exercise is fun and mind expanding and in a dreamstate it can be MIND BLOWING. Relation betwen body and mind summs up how you feel in your subjective reality.

Dont look for peace of mind as looking for anything is never peace... Just have it and be totaly ok with loosing it as trying to hold on to peace is not peace. It is a kind of paradox that we can not understand and that is the beutiful thing about peace of mind. You dont need to understand it to have it. It is always there and sooner or later you will feel it. It usualy comes in waves depending on what is hapening in life. It´s a good feeling =)

id say a clean and healthy mind is a mind without too much stress and such on it, and doesnt have any mental disorders and so

That does seem like a little bit of subconscious paranoia i think... first of all God doesn't care, secondly he's aware of human urges, and the need to have sex, because, well, he created them....

In any case I know what you mean, sometimes I get those completely irrational fears or thoughts that I know are stupid but I can't change.

In my opinion, the healthy mind is one free of too much stress, and drugs, and one that is comfortable with it's state (i.e. you're a terrible singer, and you're aware and comfortable with the fact that you're a terrible singer, or you hate your mother uncontrollably, and know that it's wrong, but you're comfortable with the fact) and free of guilt, and is able to make sensible decisions (by sensible, I mean sensible according to the definition of the mind owner).

Also one able to logically deduce what is meant to be deduced from situations, and one that can feel emotion and understand it.

That's how I always see a "healthy" mind anyway.

i dont hate no one, yet i feel like my mind is healthy, i dont worry anymore about what my mind is like. I am a pervert (cant like without my girl's ass), i love violence in media, i love sex, i love lucid dreaming and meditation and i feel pretty damn good! haha, trully i dont care anymore, just today i was playing with a science project in biology and my teacher came up to me and said "simple mind, simple pleasures" i laughed and continued...So i would say now and agree as well with 13redfan that a healthy mind is one that is conscious and cool with its self...:banana:

If a mind is healthy or not is up to the observer. In my point of view all is part of mind and there for we each live in a subjective reality. You are what you think you are... Think your self happy...

In what way, does LSD, Shrooms and Other psychadelics ( Just assuming you meant that overall ) affect your chances of having LD's?

It depends on the use. Regular pot users usualy loose the contrast betwen dream and shared reality and live somewhare in betwen saying that they do not dream anymore or that they are always dreaming. But I would say that giving LSD, shrooms a try or 2 expands your thinking and opens doors that you had no idea where there. The thing is that you can do it without the tools/drugs in dream reality or deep meditation. Pretty much the same thing but you keep the experiance out of the shared 3D reality. Sleep is one form of meditation. It is a art to sleep and it is a art to be awake. How you optimise the use of your brain and thinking is a never ending quest and only you can say when you have a healthy mind and I always have a healthy, changing, mind.

Well i've never dont Shrooms or LSD but i have smoked my generous OH SO GENEROUS share of weed and a dream even non LD made by weed is quite the experience! :banana:

I would have to dissagre with the not stress thing to LD a decent amount. Or at least WILD. When I was in college my first year I had tons of stress and even depression, but I had a ton of WILDS and LDs in the process.

The question is not if you need a healthy mind. The question is: What is a healthy mind. And there is NO way to give a definate awnser.

In the subjective reality you decide when you are healthy and when you are not healthy. Mind and body. My body is easier to judge as a wond or broken bone is easy to decide that it is not healthy and needs to heal. The mind is harder to define. We can as a colective easaly decide that a person dose not have a healthy mind if their way of thinking dose not fitt in the scosial point of view. But in that persons mind maybe we are the crazy ones with mental disorders.

When it comes down to dreaming and life in general I find that when I have good relations and little distortion from the outside world I get the most amazing mind blowing dreams. When I say distortion I mean things that take your atention and focus away from you now, and to a situation in the past or the future. It dose not matter if it´s good or bad it still takes you away from the now. If you can be in the now while awake you sure as hell can be in a dream and be aware of it and just lett your self blow your mind as you have a amazing mind with no more limits then you give it. You cant brathe in the past and your heart cant beat in the future. Observe what is now and go from there and remember to take your time as when you dream you are the creator of time and events. Slow down and enjoy the experiance to it´s fullest. Dream intense matrix bullit time dreams with a orgasm that lasts forever in a cosmic ray of light. Just sitt in space and create a comic book with awsome art. or fly at the speed of light to a unknown plane. If you just tell your self to blow your mind your mind will see how far you are ready to go. Peace of mind opens doors. You decide when you have peace with your self and everything else and when you do I have no idea of what you will find. I have no idea of what I found... But it is awsome!

I had a dream last night where i was on the berge of becoming lucid but didnt because of my alarm. the thought of this was great however what bothers me is that LDs havent been #1 in my mind. Does anyone think that one should have LDs in their head as the #1 thing all every day? i read in a book i should but i dont really agree with it:eek:

LD is part of your life style. As soon as you do anything on a regular basis it is part of your life style. I go to work, I work out, I meditate, I dream, I spend time with friends, but most of all I always spend time with me in what ever situation I am in. What comes 1st comes in waves. Sometimes I focus more on dreaming and LD and other times I focus more on friends or work. I would say keep your mind on what you want and be honest with your self and remember that you can change your mind at any given moment. I like to play around with my point of view. In one point of view I´m in a physical world in a physical body navigating in 3D. In another point of view I am always dreaming one long changing dream. When I came to a point where my dreams and dream body feel more real then this reality I just use my "waking time" to keep my feet on the ground and enjoy the part of the dream where I have no real power. In another I view the world as a colective dream with individual dreamers in individual realites. In some views I stay longer then others. But all in all reality is a idea and can be fun and mind expanding to play with. Sorry about the side tracking. What I´m trying to say is that you should never force anything in your mind, efortless thinking efort is the key and will take you to whare your intentions want you to go.

totally homes, i agree....like i do my RCs in average like at least once every hour, i mean i dont think about LDs all day but its like a part of my day to contribute to the exersises that make up LDs (i.e. meditation, RCs, reading, etc..)So yeah its like a part of my life (a lifestyle) just as much as like graffiti and stuff.....
