In people's experiences here, does having your first lucid dream catalyse the rest, or is there a respectable distance between them. Or in fact, does having a LD help at all in gaining more, or is it really just a matter of chance.

It depends on a number of factors, but to name a few
1)Motivation/Determination (You can pretty much have a WILD within your first few tries if you dont back down or focus too hard, just "float" into it)
2)Dream Recall
3)Whether or not you woke up before you tried to have an LD (WBTB)
4)Experiences with lucidity (in some cases, definately not all)
I wouldnt say its a matter of chance, but the other night i seemed to have 2 LDs in one night (the second time i became lucid i started to remember the first ld)...which was probably chance. Getting lucid once definately helps at getting there in the future. And what I meant by number 4 is if you've experience several WILDs then it's going to be easier to get into another, but having a previous lucid won't help too much (although it helps a little) if you're having a DILD.
yeah that makes a lot of sense actually! Thanks.
how long have you been trying wilds? how long did it take you to get one?
The night I first read about lucid dreaming on wikipedia, I tried a WILD. I ended up going into sleep paralysis and not getting any further. Later that morning I successfully had a WILD however. I think a lot of people have trouble doing them, but for me it came pretty naturally once I began trying. Goodluck, they are by far the most realistic LD's you can have!
