Yes or No. And motivate. Personally I think it is a little overrated, although I haven't experienced any supervivid lucid yet...
I don't think its overrated... I think its awesome... I just WILDed this morning, and I had an awesome experience, so as far as I'm concerned, lucid dreaming is everything I hoped it to be. I don't expect dreams to be ultra vivid, I just want to be able to control them and do things I want to do. If I do get an ultra vivid one, then so much the better. I guess it all depends on one's expectations of what they want out of lucid dreams. For me, I think its awesome...
No. That's my short answer.
Ok, time for a little explanation. I don't find lucid dreaming overrated. Everytime so far that I become lucid, I have one of the greatest feelings ever. I can't really be bothered talking about this feeling through writing at the moment, I am pretty sure you all know what I am talking about anyway.
I remember the first night I looked up Lucid dreaming, not even knowing what a dream really was. One of the lines on the website I read was
"Many people (*that bother to learn about dreaming and such*) have their best time of their life in their lucid dreams.
So yeah, it's not overrated :D
Not at all. I don't have any preconceptions about what lucid dreams should or shouldn't be, so they can't really be a disappointment. Then again, I never went seeking lucid dreams, they found me. Either way, I don't see how they could be overrated since it's the only conscious activity you can partake in while you're sleeping -- it's that or nothing.
How can LDing be overrated?
If someone asks about it, we say everything is possible in a dream. And I don't see how that's wrong. Ok, certain things might not be possible, although I don't have an idea of what those things are, as long as you can imagine it I guess.
I think it's major underrated
I mean name anything you ever wanted to do, if lucid dreaming is overrated all other experience is overrated
The greatest moments of my life were probably in dreams.
I've been lucid dreaming and experimenting with dream control, since I was a child. I'm now 25 and I'm still having lucid experiences that are more amazing than the last.
Overrated? No.
No way. Besides the fact that you can do every thing you've ever wanted to, the possiblilitys for impoving waking life are endless.
Underrated, especially by my surrounding peers. I mean, even the concept of realizing when one is dreaming facinates me. Of course, I was completely blown away when I learned the degree of control we can have.
Hell, we spend about 1/3 of our life in sleep. That could be lost time, or it could be time used for pretty muchwhatever your heart desires - no boundries. Take your pick :p
I dont think I have ever done anything more fun than Lucid Dreaming.
I dont know what could be!
Well come to think of it, i havent had a dream that was REEEEALLY vivid but it still is the ultimate reality defying experience, so as far as im concerned it is a lil overrated but it is 100% percent worth the overrating:banana:
I hope it's not overrated. Otherwise I would be wasting my time trying to.
That's wrong. LDs are upgraded dreams, thus greater at all aspects. The consciousness that lucidity brings only makes it easier for you to explore your mind and understand yourself. I suppose you're a newbie.Quote:
Afaik common dreams are much more important to a human than the Lucid ones. If you learn to understand your common dreams then you can understand yourself. Nothing like this can be achieved in LD.
I wouldn't say its overrated, although thats a matter of opinion. I've had some pretty neat lucids with amazing powers abilities ect. Sure its not real life but hey its more exciting. You can't let it throw you when you haven't experienced vivid dreams.
I think you're pretty much alone with that opinion, along with the previous one.Quote:
No. YOU ARE WRONG. Maybe that's because you don't understand your common dreams and just starting to have Lucid and falsely you've come to think that when the dream looks more cool then it has to be "upgraded dream " which is very wrong idea.
IMO, you're both slightly off.
I wouldn't say lucid dreams are "Better in every aspect." Whether or not they can be referered to as "upgraded" is kind of arbitrary. There are certainly some advantageous to having non-lucids. Many of my non-lucids have been just as exciting as some of my lucids (some of them: even more-so, depending on the lucid).
On the other hand, I do disagree with CloudOne about you not being able to explore and examine your dreams, while lucid. This must come from a misunderstanding of lucidity. Lucidity, without control, is simply watching the dream happen. It is a normal dream, while simply aware that you are dreaming. Thus, like BohmaN said, being conscious, you are able to see these psychological cues and elements as they happen. To even apply a little bit of control, you do not have to change the whole dream, or even stop the normal dream from happening. You can speak to the characters and "learn" from them things that may not have come about, had you not realized you were dreaming. You can familiarize yourself with waking-world fears and confront them, and so on.
They both have their strengths and whether or not one or the other is "superior" actually changes, from dream to dream.
Vivid non-lucids are cool but there's nothing like a lucid dream... I just woke up from a very vivid dream and though it was really cool I can't help but to be disappointed for not having gotten lucid...
Oneironaut: My idea was this: When someone has a non lucid dream and then wakes up, he can examine what was he dreaming about and can LEARN from it. Also some non lucid dreams CAN work as a psychological help. You can learn about yourself very much from common dreams.
I've been having Lucid dreams for a long time and I DO like them better. BUT... Recently I've learned that I can learn from my common dreams so much more about myself. Even I can learn how to solve any problems. In Lucid (very) vivid dreams I can watch everything as I was awake and really it's more about "eye candy" and control than learning about myself. Thus this makes common dreams more important.
I'm not sure I understand your point. Are you saying you can't do that with lucid dreams? If so, I disagree.
Like I said, that seems kind of arbitrary. To you being lucid is more about eye candy and control, but lucid dreaming, itself (as in, objectively) is not "about eye-candy and control". It's simply about dreaming, while knowing you are dreaming. Many people cannot even (or decide not to) control their own actions in lucid dreams, so, in this way, it is simply like waking up and looking back over your dream, in that you are simply watching your involuntary reactions to the dream content, and analyzing what you saw - much like a 'common dream.'
I give up.
edit: Lucid to me is common and I count it to common dreams, as well. The rare ones are vivid dreams which are eye candy but can't help you to learn about you.
This is not totally true... I've learned more about myself from lucid dreams than normal dreams. Everybody has normal dreams, some don't even remember them and those who do don't pay much attention to them. In lucid dreams you can have some idea of how you'd act if you're totally free of judgement from anyone else, plus, you're in a great connection to your subconscious mind, which, at least for me, is great!
Edit: And the more vivid your LDs are, the more realistic is your response to situations, that's my view...
Depends on how you define learning about yourself. From your response it is not what I understand as TRUE learning about yourself. In common dreams (lucid or not is irrelevant - they simply aren't vivid) the content and the theme of the dream is what really is important. Not how you behave but what the dream is ABOUT.
Let's clear one thing: As for me 'common dreams' consist of non-lucid and lucid without control. The 'uncommon dreams' are very vivid dreams with any lucidity level.
Regardless, I don't think many people go lucid every night they go to sleep, so most of our dream repretoirs consist of both lucid and non-lucid dreams. I don't think anyone, yourself included, considers going lucid to be a negative thing because they're then missing out on learning from a non-lucid dream. Whether or not you believe lucidity is the quintessence of the dreaming experience, I still don't see how it could be overrated, even if you view it solely as another type of dream to mix things up.
what about trying to get a greater understanding of the nature of consciousness itself. I figure that's probably easier in a Lucid.
Just a thought.:hrm:
I guess it depends on the individual, if Lucid dreaming is over rated.
It sounds like some people don't have very good Lucid Dreams.
But, I can honestly say that every one of mine have been quite awsome.
Some to awsome to put into words.
Nooo, LDs are not over rated, I have experienced lucid dreams as vivid as real life.
And I don´t think that it depends on the individual, because if doing right you can experience anything you can imagine, the problem is that many people don´t achieve complete lucidity so they think that LDs are something less intense.
But believe me, if you do it right there´s no way yo can say LDs are over rated
