      oversleeping and lucidity

      maybe this has been dicussed before, but I never saw any topic concerning this, so here it goes anyway


      Probably everyone here knows at least the sketch of the stages of our sleep. The difference between wakefulness, deep sleep, REM sleep and all.

      Also, the fact that, the more time you have been sleeping, the longer and more frequent will be your REM periods, which makes your last hours of sleep the best ones for (lucid) dreaming.

      And finally, that we wake up for really really short moments after our REM periods. It's almost always so short that we don't even realize it.


      That way, a logical deduction is made: if you oversleep a few hours, your REM will be even longer and your chances of getting lucid become higher.

      This has proven real lthe last night to me: For once, excessive control over my dream made it fade, and I was able to chain another lucid dream through that.
      Another situation is when I was in a dream and felt like using the bathroom. This got me lucid instantly and I had enough time to think "bah, I'll have to get up all walk all the way to the bathroom and out of my comfy bed" and then the dream faded.


      So I believe that, on later REM periods, not only the length, but the "quality" of the periods get better. In REM you are fully capable of staying aware of your surroundings, but for some reason that doesn't usually happen in our first REMs.



      I wanted to see other people's opinion about this. I can almost trace a relation between conciousness, dreams and evolution (yes darwin's evolution), how we achieved consciousness, and how we are still not 100% conscious: in our sleep.


      Is the evolutionary stream leading us to becoming more aware? Is being lucid in our sleep and dreams anyhow making us more "fulfilled"?

      Yes I noticed that the longer I sleep the longer my dreams tend to be and not to mention the fact that the longer I am sleeping this also increases the amount of dreams I have and then this goes into me having more dreams = me getting more chances to have a lucid dream and now with summer being here I don't really need to wake up early or anything so I pretty much sleep in everytime I sleep.

      So yes I would have to agree with what you have said.

      I love being able to sleep late now thats its summer. Most days if I wake up naturally I will have just had a dream, hopefully a good one, and that sets the mood for the day alot of the time. I would say that dreams from the later stages might seem of a higher quality is because we wake up right after them so we can remember alot of detail about what happened. This could also be true of a dream you wake up after in the middle of the night but alot of times if it's morning then I will lay there and think about the dream instead of having to worry about going back to sleep so it is the most vivid. This mostly applies for non-lucid dreams but I could see the quality of lucid dreams improving in later REM periods for reasons other than these. Lots of interesting points Kromoh.
