Alright, this is what I have been asking myself. I have come to a lot of assumptions about consciousness, and they led me to creating this thread.
There surely is a difference between being conscious in a dream and being lucid in a dream.
If you want to see some accurate consciousness concepts, read my thread about the subject (really recommend reading if you're gonna read the rest of this post).
Well, I've experienced being in a dream while completely "watching" it. I was aware of my free will and power over the dream. This, to many, would be considered being lucid, but it is not. Lucid dreaming is, apart from being conscious in a dream, knowing it is a dream.
Of course that, once conscious in a dream, the easiest thing is to assume that you are dreaming. As soon as you see a dream sign or characteristic, you will know it is a dream: that's the easiest thing.
But the problem is with being conscious in the dream. Have consciousness enough to actually be able to assume it's a dream. In most DILDs, the first thing to happen is to us get conscious, only then to try a Reality Check and get lucid. With experience, it may be even easier to assume you're in a dream: as soon as you get conscious in a dream, you realise it's a dream, so you become lucid.
Now I simply have to ask myself, if our struggle should be to be lucid in a dream, or to be conscious in a dream.
I believe that we must not focus on realising we're dreaming, but on being conscious. Realising that you're dreamign is easy once you're conscious.
What happens to natural lucid dreamers, so to say, is that they are conscious in their dreams. Once conscious, the easiest thing for them is to realise they're dreaming.
This does also explain why, sometimes we hear of Lucid Dreaming inside our dreams, but we don't get lucid. We are not conscious in it.
Our goal is not to realise we're dreaming, but to be conscious in our dreams: that's the tricky part about lucid dreaming. We cannot go to Zone 2 in a game if we haven't passed Zone 1.

my suggestion? meditation
In order to get used to beign conscious. To be able to be conscious all the time.
meditation helps with both DILDS (by making you conscious more frequently) and WILDs (by making it easier to stay conscious through the technique)
