Do you mean general stillness or not opening your eyes?
I've found that waking up without moving isn't too hard for me as I've just gotten in the habit of gathering my thoughts right away,
it took a while but whenever I woke up I just made an effort not to move until I've had a good think and tried to remember dreams. It becomes second nature in time.
I've been trying to work on this as it can be quite helpful when attempting to perform a DEILD. By not moving, I beleive it's easier to sink right back into REM.
Well, as for your question, Just drill it into your head, practice awakening and not moving, it's not that hard, just think before you act...
This may sound silly, but practice with your alarm clock. Lay in bed like you are going to sleep. Now, Set your alarm for the current time. Then, without looking at the clock, hold down the "increase time" button to get the next alarm set a short and random amount from the present time. Then, close your eyes and "go to sleep". When the alarm goes off, practice not immediately snapping up to turn it off, and recalling what you were just thinking.
The main benefit in this exercise is training the body to remain still right when you wake; just what you want! After a few days, (whenever it feels you automatically stay still when you wake up) you can stop using an alarm. You should stay still when you wake up, even without it. Now you can practice DEILD correctly. You should be able to stop practicing once you do it automatically.
I've used this technique, and it really works well. Every once in a while you might need to re-enforce the habit by practicing a couple days once more. I know I have to; I've been waking up with my mind racing lately...
Richter, that doesn't sound silly at all.
You are in fact desensitizing yourself to the sound of your alarm (or perhaps any loud sound) so that it doesn't "jar" you into moving.
Makes perfect sense to me. :D
.
Heh, thanks. :D I actually got the inspiration from Steve Pavlina, except he was trying to explain how to wake up IMMEDIATELY after hearing the alarm. Opposite results, but same method, I suppose!
If you dont want to move when you wake up I suggest having a reason, like trying deild or to remember dreams. while going to sleep just think to yourself "I will not move when I awaken from a dream", until you fall asleep, that should work.
I find it easy to not move when I wake up, its not that hard
WOW! Feel the love! 8)
Mebbe I should make a tutorial about this? I've seen the question asked a lot.
yeah and it takes a while for me to realize that i'm awake too. haha i know, weird.
Well last night, I woke up from a dream. Out of nowere I realised I could do a DEILD(I didn't move at all too). But it didn't work, cause I didn't know what I was suppose to do =P
Possibly, if you feel yourself waking up, sink into a sort of meditative state, so you will be still when you awaken.
