Ever thought you were in a coma?

Lol Just wondering if anyone else is as big a dork as me.

The other night I had a lucid dream that lasted so long, and was so grounded (though not supremely vivid...in terms of texture; color and plot line were all there) that I actually though to myself...

"Oh wow, am I in a coma? Hmm, I don't remember getting into an accident..."

Then I had the idea to wake myself up in RL to make sure. Lol I then woke myself up (for real) and looked at the clock....it had only been like 20 minutes since I had last looked at the clock. I guess the dream wasn't really as long as I thought, but it felt long lol.

Hmmm... what if that's why people in comas stay under for so long? They think it's an amazing lucid dream and don't want to wake :lol:

Nah, when you're in a coma, it's nothing but slow brain waves... Not REM.

Once, I had a lucid (just before joining, in fact) in which I had a false awakening in a labratory. They were doing tests on my vision, and said that I had been asleep for three days! I believed them until I FA'd again.

But I've grown smarter since then. During a super-long lucid dream, I don't find myself thinking I'm stuck this way. Instead, I feel I'm incredibly lucky! I doubt I could ever bring myself to wake during a lucid dream. Why would I want to?

If a dream lasts too long I usually become lucid because I get worried that I"ll be late for wherever i'm ging int he morning.

That makes no sense lol because if you knew that your dream was lasting a long time then you would know you are dreaming which would therefore put you in the lucid state...

Well I think everyone is always aware they are dreaming....but you just forget what dreaming is hehe.

I think you're right on this one; I've had situations in non-lucid dreams that in real life would've scared the piss out of me, but in the dream I was hardly worried. Almost as if I knew subconsciously that I was dreaming.

The thing to remember is that we often think in 'categoric' terms regarding lucidity. You're either lucid or you're not. But like Sandman and Osimero show, its actually more complex. Consciousness, waking or dreaming, can fluctuate a lot, you can be more conscious, you can be less conscious. It's really a sliding scale, ranging from highly conscious to barely conscious.

In dreams, in my opinion, we are always conscious, to some degree. Lack of consciousness I think would be coma. You fall into one, three days later you wake up, and there's just a big blank nothing. In dreams, we have the capability for memory (dreamrecall), and the capability for time tracking (when we wake up we usually do feel that time has passed), among other things. This implies consciousness.

So its not that you are subconsciously aware of dreaming (well you are, but that's pretty much a given), you're actually consciously aware of dreaming, just at a far reduced level :)
