This sounds really dangerous. You should try a clothespin on your earlobe or something. lol
Very concerned with the very realistic possibility of choking on it as it falls to the back of your throat in the night. Otherwise, it sounds like it could well work as it retains your focus. I think this might be the same principle as those who meditate with ever such a small discomfort or pain, in order to retain their focus.
If you guys afraid of chocking on it, I've tried something similar that doesn't require putting anything in your mouth. I laid on top of a small marble, which created a sort of dull pain that acted as an anchor for my consciousness. It's the same method as what the OP was talking about, just a slightly different way of doing it. I've also been successful with taping a penny on my forehead :P
Maybe you you try a princes and the pea (almond) routine
if you are really that scared of the fucking almond going down your throat then make a leash for it and tie it to your finger=problem solved
Couldn't the almond be a choking hazard? People have already mentioned that though, so whatever.
The hardest part of WILD for me, personally, is the sleep paralysis stage. When I reach this stage, I get so excited that my heart starts to beat extremely fast. I think it is the anticipation of becoming lucid. This usually goes from excitement to terror for some reason, and I force my eyes open.
