      The Museum of Human Perception

I went to a children's museum yesterday called the Exploratorium (I don't know if anyone lives around San Francisco, but all the schools take field trips there). It's a huge hall filled with strange experiments that are designed to totally screw with your mind and teach you something about science.

They have all these optical illusions that really made me feel like I was in a dream. In one, you stare at a spinning field of dots, and then look down at your hand to see it all mutating like the skin on your palm is bulging and twisting.

There's another where you use some device to block your peripheral vision and make someone's head disappear. It makes them look like they are only floating eyes.

Then they have all these screwball devices set up that use magnets and mirrors to make wierd stuff happen.

They have a giant 30 foot tall spherical maze set up in the middle of the place called "the tactile dome". It's completely dark inside, and you crawl around in a maze where the walls are covered in weird textures. The floor and walls move and vibrate and breathe. Very disorientating.

The whole place was like one giant failed Reality Check. It certainly screwed up my dreams last night.

Next time anybody tells me that weird stuff does not happen in real life, and they don't know when to perform reality checks, I'm going to take them to this place.

      Check out their website.

      Sounds interesting.
I was in a museum like that once. There was a dark room you went into, where some lines were stretched across the room and represented 3d space. A machine pulled the lines which made the illusion, to the person inside, that space was bending. Quite cool.

I found that hypnotic spiral thing that makes your vision "morph" or something. If that's what you described.

Wow that sounds cool. I've only been to the Carnegie Science Center in Pittsburgh and the Franklin Institute in Philadelphia (I think thats where that giant walk through heart was). Last time I was at the CSC They had this weirdly built room that made it seem like other people were either reall short or really tall (slanting roof and floor and other stuff made the illusion).

That maze sounds really cool though in a nigthmarish kind of way.

anyone ever heard of House On The Rock?
Its a big house in Wisconsin where an old eccentric millionair lived. He had TONS of weird collections. and you can walkthru the whole house.
some rooms have giant experimental machines, others have weird weapons, one section has thousands of porcelein dolls. another is a full orchestra of mannequins playing real instruments thru motorised movements etc...
weirdest place ive ever seen. granted i was really high when I went there, its still a mindfuck. I didn't RC while I was there though, because I would have been RCing the whole time.

I read about that in the book American Gods by Neil Gaiman. Sounds tight. You just talked me into it. It is now on my list of places to visit.

If you're ever in Wisconsin it's worth a quick visit. I would drive from Cali for it though.
I live a little under 2 hours from it.

I once went to an exhibition where there was a large room filled from floor to ceiling with white balloons. You had to enter and find your way out again. Very weird. Only thing was, it wasn't a museum or anything.. it was a modern art exhibition.

Those places in the US sound great. The closest thing we've got in the UK would be the Natural History Museum in London, I think. There's also a museum of weird collections in Oxford, but for the moment, the name escapes me.
