I've always found flying to be really dull and a waste of time in LDs. Why do people like it?
I'd assume it was just something you'd want to experiance in your lifetime you know. Plus its a cliche of a fun and interesting dream and something all newbs aspire to try.
Often times it feels very liberating, especially for people who have just begun to LD. It can feel like an almost spiritual experience. :)
Any chance it comes natural to you Pyro?
It comes natural to me in dreams, even non LD dreams, that's why I don't really care for it anymore. But for people who have never done it, or done it sparringly, the act itself does make for an out of this world expierence.
I'm more curious as to how anyone could "not" like flying.
It's one of the most fun things. besides free falling.
Plus, the view you get is always spectacular. That's a good enough reason for me, right there.
i've only done it once.Quote:
or done it sparringly
Hm, perhaps it's a difference in feeling. When I fly it feels much like I'd imagine soaring over New York City as free as a bird, with incredibly bubbling spirits, wind lashing the face, the sun on my back. I let out a carefree, bellowing laugh as I increase speed and lower altitude to zip past two skyscrapers.
And-- you've only flown once?
If you've only done it once, you need to do it again. Flying experiences are always different.
i have the same feelingQuote:

because it suckedQuote:
And-- you've only flown once?
If you've had the same feeling I described I find it hard to believe that it sucked. Sure I've flown and felt very little. I've flown and had the dream pop on me. Yes, sometimes it does suck. It's a little perturbing though that you're so adamant about not flying (going so far as to ask others why) when you've experienced it once and assumed that's all there is to it.
Mes is right, each time is different. It can have a lot to do with vividness and control. But if you don't want to try it again, then that's fine. I guess the overall answer to your thread's question is 'because people experience it differently'.
I really like swimming in dreams, so even when I'm flying it's usually more like I'm swimming through the air. It's a very liberating sensation either way. It's also just interesting seeing everything from above, and being able to look over a large landscape.
I have a serious lack of control in lucid dreams. Every time I fly I either hit the ground imediately or fly for a VERY short distance.
Realize that your flying experience is only what you think of it to be. It's all in your head. If you think flying is dull, it's going to be dull.
flying dreams how can that b dull?
I wish I had mo flying dreams
...You'd rather walk? :wtf:
no, i teleport. i think the feeling is much more interesting.Quote:
You'd rather walk?
have you ever heard of airplanes, helicopters, hang gliding and skydiving?Quote:
Because normal human beings can't fly in real life?
Do you honestly not understand the conceptual difference between flying in an airplane, a helicopter, a hang glider or skydiving (which isn't flying, it's falling), and flying unassisted?
Teleportation is all good, when you just simply want to get from point A to point B, but the main thrill of flying, is flying, itself, not merely as a method of transportation.
if you want to go into what has more thrill, teleportation has the more thrill for me. the feeling it gives me is very intense and unusual.Quote:
but the main thrill of flying, is flying, itself
I prefer flying over teleportation merely for the experience. Teleportation, for me, is point A *spin/jump* point B. Quick flip, very boring. Flying, on the other hand, allows a more satisfying travelling experience... If I'm in it for the scenic route, that is.
For some reason, I like assisted teleportation more than instant teleportation, when a fast trip is needed. Opening a door, jumping into a picture, that kind of stuff. Pretty fun.
I like flying because it gives me a huge sense of freedome, the only thing I get to walk around on is a very small portion of an area which is the ground, where the majority of space is up in the air.
I felt tide to the ground throughout my life.
what the hell kind of person wouldn't want to fly?
Because it's fun to fly you can go anywhere you want to go and do what ever you want to do for free and it defies the laws of gravity and with out the help of any aircraft we can't fly naturally like birds I think it's fun.
Besides being a conventional means of travel in dreams, the feeling of flight is amazing. The view from the sky also makes it worthwhile to do. Besides this, many people do it to experience something impossible to real life. Flying is most definitely not a waste of time, and to not enjoy seems to me to be more of a feat than to enjoy it. It's only human to enjoy doing something you can't ordinarily do. Why do you think people break rules all the time!

If you think rocketing through a city or a beautiful valley at supersonic speeds, dodging buildings and feeling the wind resistance against your face is dull, then you sound like a dull person, and thats just a shame.
The answer to your question is the same as the answer to questions such as "Why do people like roller coasters?" or "why do people enjoy driving fast cars?".
Its a question that doesn't really need answering because the answer should be obvious... the thrill!
I finally had my second lucid dream yesterday, and the first thing I did once I realized I was dreaming, was fly. I was actually a little disappointed, I found it a little boring. It was just like being on a tall building and looking down at the ground - not too entertaining. The rest of my lucid dream was better after I got the need to fly out of my system
Flying experiences are often different.
Sometime they can be boring in that your only seeing things from a higher perspective. Or it feels like your moving through mud. But other times if you work at it you can go really fast, feel the wind on your face, have that roller coaster feeling in your stomach etc... they are the good flying dreams. If you haven't had one like that you should keep trying, and then if you think its boring still, so be it.
Personally I like to fly around slowly releasing arcs of electricity from my body, it makes me feel powerful. Zapping any DCs that happen to be nearby. Then I take off upwards as fast as I can then come back to the ground and pull up at the last moment. very thrilling. Don't get to do it very often though, as often my control isn't good enough or I'm trying to achieve other things.
Sometimes I fly for the thrill of it, but mostly I fly just to get around.
I don't fly. It's not that it's not funny or something, but in time i used to it, and I change flying to a teleportation when i need to go somewhere.
I token (take?) it from a mental voyages (Bruce Moen is talking about it).
Somethimes i fly, but these are really rare exceptions for fun, or because situation needs that...
If I could only pick one thing to do in lucid dreams, it would be fly. If I ever lose the ability to have lucid dreams, flying will be the experience I am most happy to have had; it made it all worthwhile. I don't know why people think it is boring, but I guess they are missing out on the fun, so bummer for them.
Mankind has been trying to copy the birds for all history, its in our nature.
I keep thinking that you two are the same person. Too many references to the moon, it's confusing me. :morecrying:
Humans are exploratory.
Well, when you see both of us together, then you should know we are not the same.
Ninja I'm a little offended that you can't remember which "Moon" I am.
You guys crack me up!
Anyways...when I fly, it feels like I'm on a roller coaster. If you think rollercoasters are boring, then I can accept that you don't like flying, either.
I've never flown in an LD, but I have in other dreams. I thought it was kind of cool, but nothing i'd actively pursue.
If the first (and only) time you've flown was boring, next time try fling really fast or a different way (vertically for example) or in some new place (in space)....just thinking of it gives me thrills....
Flying is the dog's bollocks
Gravity works so hard on you, pulling you down - all the time, its nice to give it a rest once and awhile.
i do think rollercoasters are boring.Quote:

It can be quite calming, and it personally gives me a great feeling of freedom.
