List of Acronyms

I've compiled a list of common (and some not so common) acronyms used here, and on most other Lucid Dreaming forums.

Somebody might want to make this sticky/into a tutorial, or just leave it as it is. I can't think of any more, but if you've got one just tell me and I'll add it.

A mod which would make this list obsolete was being discussed a while ago, but I'm not sure if it's going to happen now, so I'm posting this anyway.

Green: Pretty much 'official', real, and often used. (ie: not made up).

Did you make a lot of those up or am have I not been doing my homework?

No, none of them are made up (by me, at least). I gleaned some from memory. The ones in red, however, are probably made up. There are references to them sometimes in shady lucid dreaming FAQ's around the web, and sometimes do get used on the forum. So, for references sake, they are included, but shown in red.

SP is Sleep Paralysis. For more information about MILD, click the "tutorial" link next to it's entry in the list. :)

NILD isn't made up, I've heard it used alot, and thats what I do with a little MILD to induce my LDs.

Most of the ones in red come from one particular website (http://brain.web-us.com/lucid/luciddreamingFAQ.htm), which I remember thinking was proselytising a bit. That is, an ACROnYM (Asociation for the Creation Of Yet Moremeaninglessnames) is usually only really acquired through popular useage - giving one to something so unusual that only two or three people on the planet have used it successfully seems like trying to give it, or the author, false authority. I reckon this website's authors havent got much personal experience, they are just guessing at methods, and they've also miss ascribed the 'I' as 'Induced' rather than SLB's 'Initiated' (pedantic aren't I? :roll: )

I've added the top ones. Not sure about the bottom - you could end up with too many, and I would personally rather people used a full definition. I mean OBE is perfectly fine if you can't fit Out Of Body Experience in the subject box, but if you can construct posts like:

"I had an LD with SP in it- I also met SLB (he was in DV?) I wanted an OBE but I didn't remember, so I was talking to some DC's instead. I'm happy I lded!"

Okay, I know only a bozo would write that, but I'd rather keep the list down to more "official" ones.

Go for it.
I disagree with the useage part. It is lazyness which leads people to start creating new acronyms. While a lot of Lucid dreaming acronyms still cannot be found in a dictionary, you can still find out information about legitimate ones through search engines.

Maybe your post could go to feedback.

Kaniaz -I agree - its very elitist to use acronyms/ abreviations, but my point was what makes something 'official' is common useage, not just because it appears on a website of spurious authority like http://brain.web-us.com/lucid/luciddreamingFAQ.htm which of course is why you put those in red! So for example already WBTB has acquired an 'official' label because it is in use on DV (not sure of its exact etiology but its not a SLB method). The other methods I listed have all been discussed in various threads, but have not been given acronyms - I did that partly tongue-in-cheek (would you list them if I puplished them on my [spurious authority] website? ), but also, as I said, there may be some benefit to at least listing and categorising the various approaches as part of the process of building knowledge in a systematic way. There is so much useful stuff on DV but its hard to access through the search engine because you have to know the word first. You cant (yet) look up "methods for attaining lucidity". Perhaps this would be better as another thread, what do you think?
Ideally your List of Acronyms (NB sp. btw) would be in the main bar at the top of the DV website - perhaps also with Dream FAQs in addition to site FAQs? Your list would also benefit from more links (I could help compile them if you like).

Yes Google's great: just did a search on 'PILD dream' and got 150 hits, definitions included Poetry Induced Lucid Dream!! WBTB got a similar number. 'LILD dream' got 265 hits with Lucidity/ Lucid dream Induced Lucid Dream, Letter Induced Lucid Dream and Light Induced Lucid Dream.
Very useful for a lucid newbie! :?
