I tried WILD last night, not WBTB, I knew it would be harder and dreams would be more vivid, but I just wanted to get the feel for it so I feel comfortable.
I don't really understand the focussing on counting breaths part. My mind wanders off every second, I can't control it! I mean I'm still counting, but in my mind I'm thinking of a jet plane flying by or something really random. Is that okay as long as I keep counting? Or do I have to stay completely and utterly focussed on counting.

As long as you're able to keep your focus and consciousness on not "blanking out" as you're about to fall asleep and enter the dream, it's fine to think of other things as well. :)

I think it actually hurts the WILD process for some people if you stress yourself out by trying to stay too focused. If you are using the counting method, just do it as best you can. When you realize your mind has wandered, just start paying attention again but don't worry about it. It's really only a way to keep your mind awake anyway, so thinking about other things isn't a problem unless you let your mind wander TOO far and end up falling asleep :)
FYI... it is near impossible for most people to WILD at the start of a night's sleep. if you plan to do it at night, you should use a WBTB, so... especially if you are new at it... a WILD attempt would be best performed then... after 6-7 hours of good sleep first so you are trying it in ripe long-REM territory. you can also try it pretty sucessfully (from tut's here) during naps.
