I personally don't, but I know that a lot of people use lucid dreaming for creativity. :)
Welcome to Dreamviews!
I'm not a muscician IWL (In Waking Life), but you'd never know it from my dreams. I dream of new songs all the time. Classical instrumentals, big band, musicals, etc. If I knew how to write music I might try to write them down, but I usually don't remember the actual tune once I wake up.
I am a musician, but I rarely write music in my dreams. I plan on using lucids to write a lot of music, but haven't exactly mastered lucidity yet... or anything close. :P
a couple of times I have played the guitar in my lucid dreams, but the thing is I can never remember what I played when i wake up. I remember playing it, but when I sit down in real life with my guitar I just cant seem to remember :P
I remember playing a beautiful piano piece in one dream... I woke up and tried to recall the tune on my tinwhistle (only thing handy :P) but it faded really quickly :(
One of my long-standing and unachieved goals is to write music while lucid, or even remember music I hear during a dream.
Some great songs have supposedly come from dreams.
Once I had a really vivid dream where I was playing guitar at one point. It was so vivid that an hour after waking up I could remember the chords and learned how to play it on my guitar. They were unique and the song sounded really interesting and I liked the beat. Ohh how I wish I could remember how to play it.
I occasionally try to play instruments or write songs while (semi) lucid; I've never had the chance to try to compose during a full blown lucid dream. Once I master the basics and am able to go lucid on a consistent basis I will definitely use some dream time to see what kind of tunes I can come up with.
When I do I will try my hardest to get them recorded and post links here or in the dream journal.
Composing music in my dreams just happens to be one of my major goals. I've played the guitar for about 4 or 5 years now...I'd really like the opportuinity to devise a "dream" studio in which I can play a piece, record it, layer over with other instraments, etc.
Also, I'd like to walk onto a huge body of water with a guitar, and actually control the waves of water instead of sound...perhaps changing the color of each wave as I change chords/progressions?
It's all just a concept right now, but as I get better at LDing, I'll see what I can come pu with...
I'm not that musical so I never write music in my dreams, I do like to create interesting things though; buildings and scenery.
Some of these have neat ambient sounds.
Yeah I play guitar regularly. Hopefully once I get my LD at a consistent rate I can try this.
In my first lucid dream I ever had I whipped out my ocarina in the dream and was going to practice it, but I thought "wait a minute how will I know that the music I'm playing is actually the way it's suppose to be played in real life". So I stopped and road a horse with a black cloak on like LOTR's wraiths and thought "kick ass..."
Haha lucid dreams are so awesome... :P
I usually have AWESOME ideas when I'm dreaming for brass choir...or something really METAL! lol
but I can't remember most of it upon awakening, maybe i'll keep staff paper beside my bed and record some of the stuff i do remember. would be interesting
In a LD I had I remembered that I wanted to try and write a song. So, I tried conjuring up a guitar but it was a little tougher than I thought. When it finally appeared I started strumming it but when I looked down, it only had three strings. I'm like "oh, c'mon!" Then I flew away :)
I have written a few songs in my dreams and have one of them almost finished recording. If I do not get up immediately and figure it out on my guitar, I will forget it. They almost always come to me on their own, intruding my dream and only a few times have I taken an active part in the process. It is a very strange thing indeed.

"maudlin's music, lyrics, and atmosphere dealt predominantly with the subject of astral projection. The band tried to find music rather than compose it. This was done through practicing astral projection and lucid dreams, from which the band were purportedly able to "bring back" pre-existing music from the astral plane (as stated by Toby Driver in the liner notes included with the reissued Bath and Leaving Your Body Map)."
Cool, eh? It'd require a lot of music theory knowledge, and you'd have to be really good at LDing, I'm guessing. I'm going to try it one day.
there was this one song i heard that i really liked, not lucid but just really good i didnt remember it though. too lazy. i wish i had remembered it. I also wrote a song in Sleep paralysis! hahaha. it was a couple chords on guitar i liked it a lil, i bet i could of made it good. only i if remembered it. I guess it was just a base, i do things better when i work off of something and make it better.
Thanks for all the responses! It's cool to hear other people's stories about dream-music, it's had a long-time fascination for me. If anyone wants to hear some of my tunes check myspace.com/robertgrenier, I'm not saying they're great but I did dream them up. Thanks again everyone!
