BRIEF Research Survey: Gender, Handedness, and Lucidity

Hey guys. I have created a pretty brief online survey, the primary goals of which are to investigate the correlations between lucid dreaming frequency & gender as well as lucid dreaming frequency & handedness. A small number of other, unrelated factors are explored as well. It should take about 5 minutes to complete, 10 at the most. I will be collecting data for one month and the results will ultimately be posted in the Research Team forum. It is anonymous and confidential. Also, feel free to skip any question for any reason (although ideally I'd prefer if you didn't ). Females and lefties are especially encouraged to participate!!

Click here to take the survey!

In my time on the board I have tended to notice that females are more likely to be "naturals," and also that they tend to recall more dreams on average. This survey should directly test this hypothesis.

The handedness investigation is more exploratory - I have not noticed any such pattern between handedness and lucid dreaming frequency or ability (probably because I never asked). However, there is a large amount of evidence which suggests that the brains of left-handers are organized significantly differently from those of right-handers, and even that left-handers tend to process information in a different fashion than right-handers. It seems reasonable enough that handedness could potentially play a role in lucid dream frequency, hence this survey.

Finally, there are a few additional questions on the survey such as parents' education level & estimated yearly income, dream journal use, etc. These are also exploratory and I will be looking for any significant correlations at all. Also I will investigate the correlation between dream journal use, dream recall, and lucid dream frequency (obviously expecting dream journal use to be a major predictor of both).

My goal is to get at least 100 participants. The more responses I get, the easier it will be to find any significant correlations present in the data. Please fill out the survey only one time. If you have any questions at all about this project, please post them in the thread. Hopefully we can all learn something by the time this is over. Thank you in advance!

Alright, I just posted this last night and I've already gotten 16 responses, so I'm pretty pleased about that. Keep 'em coming! Females, lefties, and "naturals" are especially encouraged to participate.

I am all of those! LOL. I guess I should take your survey.

I'm a righty female. My first lucid dream was natural, that's how I found out about it! That was two years ago and I had my second good one was a couple of nights ago... hoping for more sometime within the next decade haha

Thanks to everyone who has participated so far! As I write this I've already gotten 42 responses in only about 36 hours, which is way better than I could have hoped for. I still need more, though! If I keep getting responses at this rate, I might shell out another $25 to buy another 100 responses (this website charges 25 cents per "credit," aka response). That would put me at a maximum of 220, which would be awesome.

The reason that I am encouraging lefties, females, and "naturals" to participate is because, as expected, the majority of people responding are right-handed, male, and non-naturals (the majority on that last one is overwhelming). The ideal situation for me would be for each group that I am comparing (lefties vs righties, women vs men, naturals vs non-naturals, frequent LDers vs sporadic LDers, etc) to be equal in number, although that isn't a necessity. So while everyone is encouraged to participate, those fitting into the former group in any of those categories are "especially" encouraged .

I'm a right-y natural female. Liked how easy this was to do. Some lucid research that has been done on this site had been really difficult ot participate in or complete.

Hey DuB, just did your survey. I'm a male, righty, natural. Hope I don't ruin any hypotheses! Your experiment is definitely related to the one I'm running at http://www.dreamviews.com/community/...ad.php?t=54033. I'd be very interested to see the results, but as my thesis is due in a couple of weeks, I cannot wait until early May. Have you found any correlations between handedness and lucid dreaming frequency or naturalness thus far? If so, how strong, and how many participants?

I haven't run any statistical tests on the data yet. All I've done at this point is sort of eyeball the responses to see how many respondents were lefties vs righties, males vs females, etc. (On a side note, the responses for the "deepness of sleep" and "hours of sleep" questions are forming perfect, textbook "bell curve" distributions - I find this strangely pleasing . Most of the others are not so pretty, though.)

Anyway, at the rate I'm collecting responses, it's unlikely that I will have to wait until early May to analyze the data as I had expected. I've gotten 78 responses in 5 days! Currently the maximum number of responses this site is giving me is 120. However, even if I decide to shell out some extra cash for an additional 100 responses, I could probably get all my data before the end of April. So it's very possible that my results will be posted sooner than May.

Done. A male, right handed natural. This said, I am Autistic, so I may trash your stats!

Thanks to everyone who participated. I stopped collecting data yesterday afternoon after receiving a total of 120 responses. I've finished analyzing the data and the results are discussed in some detail at this thread in the Research Team forum:

If you have any further questions or comments concerning this research, please post them in the other thread. Thanks.
