I was just wondering, how many people here are natural lucid dreamers, and how many had to learn about it and how to do it, from Tutorials on DV or other sources?
Edit: In reply to Shift's reply, I would define a Natural Lucid Dreamer as someone who at some point lucid dreamt regularly without knowing anything about lucid dreams and without having made any effort to lucid dream at all.
I was a natural lucid dreamer when I was a kid (like most of the people I guess), but now not anymore! so do I pick yes or no? =p
Depends what you mean by natural, I guess. I think there are a lot of different definitions floating around on this site alone. I had my first lucid without having ever heard of lucid dreaming before, and after practicing for two years have had a few more. Does this make me a lucid dreamer, or not? I tend to think of myself as not natural. Of course I guess it depends... would I have had those dreams without having researched LDing online first? So I think you have to define "natural" better before anyone can answer such a question.Quote:

I recently completed a study for the Research Team forum where I asked people, among many other questions, how frequently they had lucid dreams before they began trying to induce them (in other words, their natural lucid dreaming ability). Out of 120 respondents, here is what I found:

So you can decide for yourself depending on what precisely you consider to be a "natural." For example, if we define a natural as someone who has always had at least 1 lucid dream per week, then we could estimate that that would be around 6.7% of the users on this forum. It's important to remember that Dream Views likely gets a skewed sample of natural lucid dreamers, so the percentage in the general population is probably much lower.

Most people never had a lucid dream before inducing them? That's strange. :?
After telling my little sister about my first LD (she's 17yo), she started having them on nearly a nightly basis. All because I'd told her they were possible. I am SO jealous! She's not even that into them. She tells me about them because she knows I am, but she's never enthusiastic. How unfair!Quote:

There seems to be a lot of confusion with it, since the word natural can mean both innate, and proficient without much effort.

It seems there are three(+) types:
People who have been able to do it for years, and have good control and etc., who no one denies is a "natural".
People who have had one or two, and have since been incubating the ability (I fit under this). "amateurs"?
People who have never had one, but have heard about them, and have since been trying. I guess these are "novices"?
Of course, then there are people like my sister, who heard about the possibility, and became a natural immediately. I guess they would also be considered "naturals", because the gift of LDing was not something she had to work for.
Notives and Amateurs are the same thing, it's all about if you're a Natural or not. :P
Being natural is granted to all of us ;) what we should ask is, how do we unlock our potential to it? ;) woops im an unatural dreamer.
I'm not a natural, but after you get used to lucid dreaming they come pretty quickly.
Yeah. I was thinking novice for someone who is brand new, amateur for someone who is developing the skill and has a small amount of it, the natural as someone who never had to work at it. That's only skill-wise. I've got an exam tomorrow, I haven't got the time/energy to try to figure out how to classify when you started LDing :tongue:Quote:

Yea i i've naturally had lucid dreams all my life before I found this website. I even had WILDS without knowing what they were, but this website still helped me understand more.
before i knew what lucid dreaming was, i would have them like once every 7-10 days. i did not even use RCs i just knew i was dreaming. but all i would do was go for the bootay:hump: (pope did not like this:nono::pope:). then one day someone told me that it was called lucid dreaming. so i googled it, found this, and a few days later i joined. since then with WILDs i have close to 1 LD a night. and now i do cooler things with them. :D does that make me a natural? but this threads definition, i guess so.
I'm a natural. I still make no effort to LD and I get them once a week or more. If I try I can usually get one every other day at the minimum.
For all of you who have LDs without even trying, or who can drastically increase the frequency with minimal effort... how good is your control? Could you describe your typical LD, so we can get an idea of the skill level that goes along with naturally-induced lucid dreams?
My control is as good as I need it to be. As for typical LD, I usually take a long walk. Maybe fly for a while. Just see the sights. If I have a certain dreaming goal I will work on that. I am also highly in tune with my subconscious when LDing, so if I feel that I must do something than I do that. It's hard to explain. I rarely do any active control anymore (e.g. blowing things up, killing DCs) instead I just do what I feel like doing. Now that I'm thinking about it I need some new dream goals. . .Quote:

I think the "natural" way to lucid dream is Dream Induced Lucid Dreams, though, I deem everything natural as long as it's not a drug or visual/audio outside influence (dream masks, etc) - as long as you can achieve it with your own mind without added substances or direct outside influences, I think it is defined as natural.
naturals....luckly ass people, you dont know what you have. honestly what i would do to be able to jump from normal to natural, dam. to me becoming a natural would be as exciting as getting photographic memory over night. but I'll have to work for it.

Over the last few years I've been practicing the techniques, and get around 6 LDs a month now.
I could probably get more if I was more diligent, but I've been experimenting getting more LDs without doing the hard work (suppliments, easy techniques etc...) which is a job within itself.
I definitely don't consider myself a natural, but every week or so, I have an LD, and just by using autosuggestion for about a minute before going to bed. I just seem to randomly have them (DILD), although going to bed around 10, and *knowing* that I will wake up later than normal (around 8), seems to induce me to have them more often.
About flying: In non-lucid dreams, I can do it fine, but in lucid dreams, all I get is low gravity. It's probably because I can't fathom the ability to fly while being aware.

I must say though, i'm surprised that the majority on this poll voted no, only because i expected mostly the natural LDers to even look on this thread. oh well... now I can go on with my business being jealous of the naturals.

I had a lucid dream last night! and my control was 100%. So now which definition do we use? :tongue: That makes me a non-naturally-induced, but naturally proficient lucid dreamer haha
To me, dreams have always been lucid by default. I can count the number of times I've become lucid in the middle of a dream on one hand. That is to say, I don't use induction techniques, or recognize dream signs, I am just lucid from the start.
It's hard to explain, but even in dreams where I don't go off in first person and manipulate my surroundings and whatnot, I am constantly controlling things passively and am at the very least aware of that fact. Dreams feel like dreams, not just when I wake up and think about it, but throughout.
My dreams tend to be lucid in the sense that many people use (aware, controlling them, first person etc), or they will be like a movie that I am directing, or a video game I am playing. Rarely do I have dreams where I am completely unaware that it is not reality, and that I do not feel in control.
This is where I get when people might talk about low levels of lucidity. I think in my case that I am always aware when I am dreaming, but because I am a natural lucid dreaming, and have been lucid dreaming since I was a kid, that I just sort of go with the motions most of the time. I don't stop and smell the roses as it were.

I used to be natural at lucid NIGHTMARES, before I knew what ld was. But that was all,and they were uncontrollable, so it doesn't count.

I had no idea. I've never been able to consciously induce a lucid dream, mine have always been just "natural" dreams. But according to this bit of research, it's a learnable process and I should keep my chin up and keep working on induction techniques.
On MrBeelzy's comment: I also notice that I excercise an amount of control in my dreams, but I don't call it exactly lucid. I never am aware that I'm dreaming, but I do control what happens. An idea pops into my dream-head, and it happens right before my dream-eyes.
i was a natural lucid dreamer when i was a kid. when i was about 14-16 i stopped having nightmares because i learned that i could control my dreams. from there i flew for the first time and was able to easily VILD and MILD. i was also able to re-enter into a dream by reading notes on previous dreams that i liked (i think called DJILD). i used to do a lot of weight lifting then so vitamins and amino acid blends may have helped out.
i'm impressed with myself because i never knew what lucid dreaming was at the time... i just knew i could do it.
i began smoking pot and it all went down the shitter.... i'm so pissed at myself because i'm a complete noob again but i know the feeling and the methods so i quit and hopeful to regain my abilities.
I'm somewhat in the middle, I remember having lucid dreams before I knew what lucid dreaming was, but I have greatly increased the frequency and vividness of them since I began pursuing them.

Anyway, I feel so inferior. I've never had any gifts when it's come to LDing, altough I have had OBE nightmares...(not fun) I can LD now however, but I learned from scratch.
Trust me you should not think of yourself as inferior to me... lol, but thanks for the compliment. I'm in the same situation you are now with teaching myself to LD again, but i've never had an OBE—i'm very interested in this. An OBE nightmare i can imagine would be a horrible thing.Quote:

Think I half qualify, or about three quarters. Interesting results anyways. From an early age I could control my dreams, but not with the massive control I can now employ in them, but breaking a nightmare and some random kiddy koolio (fly, be superman), and try to learn to write (LOL) cannot compare to...other things now. :)

ugh.all of my nightmares are lucid and they suck!!!very scary and most of the time i can't wake my self up from them.i want to know if there is a corrolation between night terrors and natural lucid dreamers.....?
I don't know how strong of a corrolation there is, but I have lucid dreamed since I was young and I also suffered night terrors for many years.
I've always lucid dreamed, never had to learn to do it or think about doing it. I suppose I'm a natural at it. Of course, that isn't to say that I can think of a fence appearing and it does.
Not all my dreams are lucid but a great number of them are. Wish I could say my dreams were maleable instead of just palpaple but that would be a lie.
I'm a natural. I have been having lucid dreams since I was a little girl, before I even knew there was a name for them. However, I've noticed a huge improvement in the quality and quantity of my lucid dreams since coming to this site. I like the idea categorizing the types of dreamers... amateurs, novices, naturals, etc.
When I was about 5 or 6 I had a reoccuring nightmare of being chased by a huge hairy man-bear through my house haha. One night having the dream I thought to my self " wow Im dreaming I can just wake up" and I tried pinching my self in the dream to wake up but couldnt wake up for about a minute (wierd.. now Its hard to stay lucid). The dream came back again, I became lucid, ran away from the manbear, went to my front door and jumped into the sky with amazing relief and complete awe of the beauty of being lucid in a dream. The nightmare never came back again, and I gained an amazing new interest.
