Effort
I was just wondering... What do people mean when they say, "If I put some serious effort/work into LDing, I can have them quite reguarly." It doesn't make sense. I mean, every night is another chance to become lucid, so just by thinking about lucidity, don't we put "effort" into it? I, for one, am in a huge dry spell, but I don't really treat LDing any differently than I did when I was having them once a week, and I am less stressed out now than I was then.

The real effort comes form disciplining yourself to keep an updated dream journal.

......and when wilding isn't fruitful, there is little motivation to continue, so effort is required.

What they mean with effort, is, as Dizko said, keeping an updated dream journal, but also keeping up and working on whatever technique they are using. An example of this is those who rely on reality checks to have lucid dreams, if they slack off and don't do them, they might experience less or even no lucid dreams.

With regards to WILDing, it helps to set aside a morning or two a week to attempt WILDing instead of trying it randomly. A little effort put into keeping a WILD schedule can help a alot when you're trying ot get lucid.
I haven't had the time to stick to my WILD schedule for the past few weeks and my lucid dreams have practically vanished. I know that once I start putting effort back into practicing WILDing, lucidity will come back. A little extra effort can go a long way.

For me, putting effort into means constantly paying attention to whether or not I'm dreaming. Watching for anything out of the norm, with the exclusion of any other thoughts for extended periods of time. I mostly do this at work.:P
And during walks in the park.
