Ever had one of those "dreams" that happen only a few seconds after you fall asleep, were you are, say, riding a bike or skydiving, only to find yourself about to hit the ground, and you wake with a "jolt"? I have a few questions about this. First of all, ever had one? Next, can you attain lucidity in this state? And lastley, these occure everytime I try to fall asleep into a dream, such as a WILD or a CDFILD (Confidence and Dream Feeling Induced LD). Whats that mean? -Thanks!

That, my friend, is called a Hypnic Jerk, and everyone has experienced them. :)
As to the attaining lucidity part of it...I'm not really sure. You're going from one state of consciousness to another so fast, I don't think you'd have time to realize it so you could turn it into an LD.

It was funny, I said "When did start riding my bike? I thought I was in bed! Is this a drea- AHHH!!!!" So maybe lucidity is posible. I'll update this tomorow, thanks snowy. I was woundering what they were called. I kept having them in class today. People were laughing :P
I've actually had a lot of these and I've read in many places that this is why you get these jerks :
When you sleep, your astral body leaves your phisical body and kind of hovers over it, and sometimes when it re-enters it doesn't have a very nice landing and that's why you can wake up with a jerk. This can go the other way around for when you enter a dream.
You don't need to believe this if you don't want to, I'm just posting what I've learned and what I believe this jerk is.

2. It's possible, but very difficult. You're body is going into a deeper stage of sleep and this imagery is pretty much what you go through before you get there. At the beginning of the night, the time spent in non-REM is longer than time spent in REM sleep, but that time switches as the night goes on which is why you're more likely to recall dreams in the morning than shortly after you falla sleep.
3. Again, your body is falling asleep and there is a lack of sensory input. It becomes almost exclusively a mental state (that can sometimes be influenced by sounds, lights, smells, etc.), and your mind projects images and sensations just like in a normal dream. In this case, you're intending to remain conscious as you fall asleep, so you're more aware of this phenomenon. It's perfectly normal :)
