Disembodied Head

I have a question. I was taliking to my friend at class about LDing and someone overheard the conversation and told me a freaky story.

so he had a friend who was exploring the world of LD and after one he woke up and in the corner of his room he saw a disembodied head staring at him. he said he was sure he was awake because he had been doing it for awhile and could tell the difference. he closed his eyes and opened them again and it was still there. he couldnt get it to go away so he just went back to sleep

later the guy who told me the story met another friend from a totally different part of the world who had the same experience after lucid dreaming, except it was on his bedside table. the two could not possibly have met before.

is this common? could this sortof thing be chalked up to something like sleep paralysis or false awakening (which he said was certainly not it)? Not that it would make me want to LD any less, but i was wondering if anyone had or knew anyone who had a similar experience, or am I just being BSed?

I've heard a lot of stories about people seeing freaky things while in sleep paralysis. Old hags flying around the room, then you close your eyes and open them again and they are RIGHT IN FRONT OF YOUR FACE. Creepy stuff like that. I've never been awake under sleep paralysis, so I can't speak from experience, but if there is any explanation that I can think of, it's that.

I haven't ever heard of that.
Why on Earth would you just go back to sleep if you saw a head staring at you. I'd probly do flying kick towards it if I thought it was real.

It could have possibly been a false awakening. Those can be really hard to separate from real middle-of-the-night awakenings.

I've seen a demond come out of the window and get right in my face while I was at work sleeping. It seemed very real, but it had nothing to do with lucid dreaming.

yeah I agree. I would personally be too scared/intrigued to go back to sleep. I think I'd attempt to strike up a conversation with it, but then that begs the question, what do you say to a disembodied head? "so uh... fine weather eh?" then it'd probly go all satanic prophet of doom on you and say something cryptic that you won't understand until later on like "beware the two headed queen" and then start laughing all scary like and burst into flames.

... or something.

I've had a couple instances where I was lying in bed and I'd see a man standing next to my bed. Both times that I can remember, I kicked at him and yelled at the same time, then he'd disapear. To this day it feels like I was 100% awake. :?

I've gotten episodes like this before in my life. I have paranoia that someone is going to break into my house and harm my family. One time I woke up around 3 A.M. to see a figure standing over my bed, I jumped up at it and it disappeared. After that I seemingly feel through my floor and soon after woke up in a cold sweat. I really think it was my first accidental lucid dream.

Hmm well allow me to share a very cool experience I had with a disembodied head... sort of:

"I had two false awakenings, both of which became DILDs. In the first, I woke up in my bed and everything seemed absolutely normal. I was laying down to go back to sleep, but my hair was getting in the way and annoying me. I started grabbing it behind my head and twisting it, and there was just too much hair! I didn’t want to put it on my pillow, so I started to push it behind the headboard, against the wall. I was kind of grossed out, thinking that there might be dust or something, but I had about 8 feet of hair. I remember thinking, “OK I seriously need to go get a haircut already. I knew my hair was long, but Jesus Christ!” As I’m stuffing it down, I pick up the last of the hair and attached to it is my own head. I don’t remember looking down at the neck to see what else was there, just that my face was in profile, looking to my left, and that I could see my mole and my nose, and my face was accurate! I realized it was a dream and started laughing at myself. I dropped the head and did a reality check, pushing my finger through my palm. It popped right through, and I looked around my room. It looked extremely real, except that the shelves were no longer in front of the window. I made the classic mistake and rushed into the dream, instead of stabilizing. I decided to find some flying shoes and put those on first. I looked on the floor and there were some sneakers scattered about, so I got two white sneakers and started putting them on. I tied the lace of the right foot, but when I went to put on the left foot I blinked, or everything went dark, and I woke up in my bed."

This was absolutely one of my very favorite lucids, because it was so damn cool. I realized right away what was going on and just laughed and ignored the head, and it disappeared from the dream altogether. Remember, to get rid of something like that, don't harp on it, don't look at it, don't talk to it. Just ignore it and do something else. If you let it stay in your mind it will remain, but if you distract yourself with all the better things there are to do in a lucid, you'll be fine. And either way, it can't hurt you at all.

wow, that's an intense and freaky dream. I think if that happened to me it would be one of those situations where you immediately start trying to escape and at the same time figure out what's going on. Then as soon as you realise it's a dream your escaping instinct kicks in and you wake yourself up without a second thought.

but anyway, you said you had two false awakenings. Does that mean when you woke up after tying the sneaker you were still dreaming? and if so, did you seek more sneakers? and if so, do you often look for magic sneakers in your LDs? I'm quite curious now.

Despite all the reassurance, this thread is freaking me out. XD

Finding my head attached to my hair was amazing. I wasn't scared in the least, partly because my mantra is "If I see something scary, it means I'm dreaming!" (I am totally afraid of the dark, horror movies, etc. so this helps me relax and look forward to and appreciate seeing scary things) and also because it was MY head, so I knew that it had to be a dream, there was just no other way for that to happen. I was thrilled, and felt no panic or horror. I was tossed into such instant lucidity that I realized I should just drop the head and move on in the dream, I didn't harp on it or even look below the neck!

Well I don't exactly remember what the order of actual and false awakenings was, the exact note in my computer DJ was "I tied the lace of the right foot, but when I went to put on the left shoe I blinked, or everything went dark, and I woke up in my bed. After going to sleep, I had another False Awakening (not sure how after, though). I woke up and I was lying in my bed. Mom came into the room..." I'm pretty sure it was a real awakening after the first FA, I went to sleep, then had another FA. I don't recall any dreams between the two. I'll check my handwritten when I get home from my vacation, there might be something enlightening in there. I can't remember if I even wrote them down by hand when I woke up from them, or just at the end of the night when I got up for good.

The sneaker thing was my attempt at circumventing a common problem of mine, phasing through objects. I usually rush through my lucids stupidly and don't try to get out of buildings properly when I want to go flying. I try to (unsuccessfully) use windows instead of trying doors or more interesting ways. Here's the bit of the entry about that: "I decided that since I always try to go through windows and wake myself up, I would try to get around that. I decided to find some flying shoes and put those on first. I looked on the floor and there were some sneakers scattered about, so I got two white sneakers and started putting them on."

I think it was sort of inspired by the caps in the game Super Mario 64. That game is amazing, I grew up on it and I'm always thinking about the flying cap. I actually had a dream I was flying around the flying cap level a few days ago. :tongue:
