Wee! IQ tests are fun.

I was wondering. First of all I realize that IQ tests are not always valid because of many reasons that could affect your score. From tests I have taken in the past 4 years online I have scored between 127 and 157. When I was younger I was also tested. It was actually an official test. The documentation on it was lost so I am not certain what it was. My mom told me it was in the low 140s. I was wondering... Should I just average out the online tests I have taken or go with the score I recieved when I was 6. Which would be more accurate?

It might be a good idea to take an official I.Q. test in the near future, then you will not have to worry which is more accurate.
But if you are lazy, like me... I would just average out the internet scores.

WHy does this matter?

I don't really think that a IQ test tells how intelligent a person is in general.

You know, it exist's many different kinds of intelligence.
Many intelligent scientists didn't get so good results on school, for instance.

"His chances of having any good career in the future are slim, as he messes about and neglects to pay attention in classes".

I don't really think that a IQ test tells how intelligent a person is in general.

I agree... somewhat. To make an analogy to physics, IQ is kind of like potential energy, potential energy is not a very concrete thing because it's merely a meausure of energy stored... that energy isn't being released unless something else happens. (dropping a coin from a building releases potential energy)... in a way IQ is the same thing, its just a measure of potential. It requires a force (willpower, the willingness to do well at things) to attain full activation of it. Without that, IQ isn't really measuring anything important.

I knew one person with a high IQ (the 140 range), but she usually acts like a complete moron and is generally a pretty lazy person... now granted, I have managed to get her in a corner and actually have a semi-intelligent conversation with her, when this happens the high IQ is very apparent, however, she seems to lack the motivation to use the brainpower to do anything truly worthwhile with it.

Definately don't average internet IQ tests, or even take them seriously. It's probably best to go with what you got at age 6 (140 is pretty impressive), but if you want an accurate idea of what your current IQ is you should get another official test because the numbers often vary from childhood to adulthood. Doesn't matter too much, but having a high IQ is cool because it's a feather in your cap and something nice to put on a resume. ;)

Thats ridiculous. The potential energy is there in anyone. The only tangible thing an IQ test can actually detrmine, is how good at IQ tests you are. Doesn't mean anything else. And I bet you could get into some really intelligent conversations with people with low IQ's.

Yeah, that's what I said. It's potential though, it's only there potentially, it dosen't actually manifest itself unless the person actually chooses to use their brianpower to their fullest extent, which is a matter of free will.

But maybe I misinterpreted that statement, do you mean to say that the potential for intellectual greatness is available to everyone? When was the last time you saw a mentally handicapped person win the nobel prize?

That's like saying that the only thing any test can measure is your ability to take the test itself. Tests are called tests for the reason that they test ability in a given subject... in the case of IQ tests those subjects are usually mathematical, verbal and spatial ability (pattern recognition, etc), which most psychologists would agree are indicators of average intelligence. Psychologists wouldn't use IQ tests to determine intelligence if they just measured how good you are at IQ tests.

Now bear in mind that I'm not saying that IQ tests are some infallable indicators of intelligence, and I'm not saying that you can't have an IQ of only, let's say 110 and produce a brilliant work of art. All that I'm saying is that in the long run intelligence is something that is a matter of willpower (how you use what you already have) which is only somewhat limited by the amount of general intelligence you have (your IQ). People with higher IQs just have a greater potential with which to work with, and would therefore have an easier time being sucessful and in presuing intellectual endavors. There are limitations to this, however. A mentally handicapped person with an IQ of 70 isn't going to discover the solution to the Riemann hypotheis.

You sure can. Most people have the ability to have intelligent conversations, but you have to keep in mind that the ability to carry on an intelligent conversation does not imply intelligence, all it implies is the ability to understand the language being used and the ablity to respond to that language accordingly, and smarter people are better able to respond accordingly.

IQ tests suck.

IQ is in my opinion a word that often lead to a misconcept.
Intelligence has mainly to do with the induvidual's ability to use the brain centres as efficiently as possible.
A talented or very intelligent person use only the brain parts who is necessary to do a precise task, instead of using the whole brain at once.

So very intelligent people do propably use the brain more constructive, if you will.

I think it's very difficult, if not impossible, to know how talented a person is only by one test.
Intelligence is more complex than that.

Just wanted to point out that 75 is not actually considered mentally retarded. They would say they have a learning disability. With 100 being the average that means that 3 billion people are below 100 with 3 billion above. (and a few inbetween :)) Most people are in between 75-125. It actually goes as low as 25 or so before you are a vegetable...

Ever see a Beautiful Mind? I think the potential for intillectual greatness is in anyone, but for some its hard to understand because thier minds are so different from the rest.

And yes, I am saying that the only thing a test can test is how good you are at taking that test. Its true. That is the only tangible thing it can measure. And for somethings mathematics, you can get a geneal idea of what they know in math, but what is IQ? Can someone define it please. The only thing measuring it is these tests. Whats the value in a high IQ? I bet people could create tests that certain people with mental "illnesses" would score higher than everyone else. We could call it a BQG test. What is BQG? I have no idea, I jsut made it up. But whatever it is, its just as important as an IQ.

Iq = Intelligence quotient (It means that the easier you can solve a question (the easier you can think through it) the higher it is)

I'm a member of mensa with an IQ of 156, www.iqtestone.com has a good test if you want it it was 4 points away from my offciail iq.

Exactly...it measn you can solve through problesm better,...but you cant? IQ is a bunch of BS.

I think you can get a basic idea taking a test but things like feeling rushed or being worried you wont do good can change it. So could being stressed, not eating right, or being tired. Then there is always a bit of luck. It also depends on how often you practice. If you take a test twice a week you will score way better than someone who took their first IQ test, just because your more used to it.

I tried that test, I got 130. I don't have anything to compare it to so I can't say how close it really is. I notice something funny though. When it gave the results it said the average was Middle school graduates. I am not sure if that is true but if it was, thats pretty low for an average.

an average score is 100... so you are better than average :D

I got 149 on that test and I'm happy with that.

116 was my IQ.

I got a 143, which is close to the 148 I got when they had me do an IQ test in high school.

Allthough I don't trust true/false IQ tests, or online tests at all for that matter.

and yeah... I think the scale they send out in that e-mail is a bullshit... at least the titles they give next to them. In mosts tests anything above 130 is considered genius level, though it depends on the test's bell curve. Saying that an IQ of 145-154 is needed for the intellectual capacity of research or being a professor is absolutely ludicrious.

I get a creeping suspcision that people that get a high IQ result from any IQ test, fake or not fake, are more than happy to just sit with that score and not question anything.
