Has anyone ever been dreaming and had moments of where dreams were lucid even though you weren't trying to make them lucid in the first place?
I ask as this happens to me sometimes and I find it strange :?

Yes, pretty much every lucid dream I've just randomly become lucid. I always know that I'm dreaming but I'm super paranoid about it and do excessive reality checks :|
I think merely thinking about lucid dreaming every now and then will cause me to think about it while dreaming, and then I just know that I'm dreaming, I imagine it's the same for others.
from what iv seen from my dream journal, dreams seem to be made of our long term memory (somtimes short term memory, like what you did that day) but for me, nearly all the time its long term memory, eg, people iv known for a long time, places iv visited regularly.
i found out about lucid dreaming a week ago, that is still short term memory, but i recon the longer i keep it in my mind, the more it is going to become long term memory and the more likely i am to think about it in my dreams, thus hopefully make a connection and become lucid
Yes, random DILDs are very common and for the people who have not mastered WILD, are often the primary sources of lucids.
