Knowing When a WILD is successful

I've been going hard at this for 2 weeks now with me ending up in the SAME spot every time.

I lay down to go to sleep, and I sit perfectly still to the point of me feeling a shock and my limbs going numb (Is this even SP? I rarely feel anything on my chest, but it feels like I kinda get jolted into numbness). But... I don't see any HI (I did once, but I screwed it up)... sometimes I hear things, but it doesn't seem to get any more focused the longer I stay.

The thing that gets me every time is that it feels and looks like I'm in my bed looking at the window over head of me a bit after SP(I think) sets in... but it doesn't feel like I opened my eyes at all, is this normal? Whenever I do a reality check... it always comes up as me not being in a dream (unless my dreams have electricity in them).

Basically, I can feel completely numb... but there are no other indicators of when I'm going into a dream. So... how do I figure out if my attempts are successful before breaking off the attempt (Every night I've woken to turn on the lights and checking out my hands to figure out I failed :/ ).


Can anyone give me a little insight to what's actually going on? It's been driving me mad as I think I'm close to getting it successfully down.

Are you paralyzed? If not, then no. If you're not sure, then no one can say unless you actually try to move and can't.

If you are viewing something, can you try to do a reality check that way since it wouldn't require movement? Move a digital clock near by the window where you could see it, or like a doctor's eye chart :tongue: What reality checks do you do? How many/how many times? Sometimes they don't work, so you can't always trust a single RC.

the trick is, when your body is saying "I'm totally exhausted now- please give up" to just laugh at it and say "cool- this means I"m getting close"

Wait. Are you sleeping 4-6 hours before attempting this? If not, there is almost no way to get past SP! I made that same mistake once, and lie in bed in SP for 2 hours before I gave up.

You absolutely HAVE to sleep before attempting.

yeah as puppycat said- sleep a few hours first. three and a half hours is what does the trick for me.

Not sure if its SP.
SP is often (but no neccesarily) accompanied by Hypnogogic illusions caused by your bodies switching from external stimuli (touch, hearing, sight) to internally generated stimuli.

A lot of people describe a warm tingling wave (some describe it as a mild electric shock) that comes over them, from toe to head as their body shuts down. They then can hear noises, feel vibrations or movements like they are shaking. Which of course they aren't. Some also describe what seems like a difficulty in breathing. I'm not sure, but this seems to be to describe your body switching to an automatic reflex. In reality your getting more than enough air, it just feels like your breathing quicker and shallower than you would during the day. Finally, a lot of people describe the feeling of their heart beat quickeing. This may be excitement, but has been described as another illusion created by the change from awake to dream mode.

I'm not sure if you we're attempting to describe the above.
If you were then it is likely you were near or in Sleep Paralysis.

However, there are also common feelings as you progress to the above state. This is a relaxing of the body (some describe it as a lead blanket) and possibly pins and needles, probably due to your blood circulation slowing down. You are after all almost in a trance state. It is possible to move from this state, and you can be slow and sluggish, but it is not SP property, which cannot be mistaken.

It is however a definative stage on the way to SP, and should be celebrated.

I'm don't agree with Shifts simplistic argument that if you can move you're not it SP. Your body is designed to switch SP on when you dream, and off when you awake. Almost everyone has experienced a nightmare where the instantly awake and sit bolt upright - which is proof positive that it can and should be quick. So it may well be perfectly possible to be in SP, but can break out of it at will if you need to (this is after all how the body is designed to work).

Theres a lot of threads, discussions and tutorials on SP. You should read as much as you can and make up your own mind. There is also no beating personal experience.

True. SP co-incides with REM sleep, which you won't normally experience until an hour or two after going to sleep. Later in the night REM periods get more frequent and longer. This will increase your chance of WILDing succesfully.

True.

Unless you can stay still and remain aware during light, slow wave, and entry into REM stage, all without focusing on anything but till not loosing conciousness - which should all take just under 2 hours.

Well, I usually don't go to bed beforehand...

But, I've seen heard the HI without getting sleep before hand (it was like a sparkler that spun around my left eye). I'm pretty sure I am going into SP (but the sensation usually changes. One day it will feel like my stomach isn't there and I'm breathing with my chest only, one time I felt pressure on my head and some slight pressure on my chest, another it felt like someone was taking a rolling pin to my body, etc...) as it is pretty difficult to move (I can move, but it's pretty slow and it feels like I haven't moved my hands for ages).

As I said, a little after my body goes into SP (or what I think is SP), I can usually see up at the window above me, I dunno if I'm actually opening my eyes (I'm not thinking about it) or whats going on. Whenever I turn on a light, it turns on. Whenever I hold my hand above my clocks laser (my clock has a laser that shoots the time on the ceiling so I don't gotta look at the clock) it shows on there. Whenever I look at my hands, they look normal. Should I try more?


So do I have to get at least 3-6 hours of sleep before doing it successfully? No ways around this? Then what am I experiencing?

How long should I stay up when I get out of sleep?

Probably the transition into slowwave sleep.

It is possible to have SP and hear noises, but you will never get a dream.
