Last night, I had a dream where at a point, I was blatently in control. What do you guys feel about what's right and wrong in dreaming. Should anything go? Murder, espionage, sex, whatever...
it's all in your head. (maybe not totally, but we're discussing it. for now, it's better to just go with that.) controled thoughts. if you feel thinking about murder / sex / whatever is wrong, then yes, it's wrong. otherwise, yes, anything goes.
welcome to the forum.
i think its all fine as long as you acknowledge that its wrong. and you acknowledge that you're dreaming.
a couple weeks ago i had a dream where me and my friends were running around beating up old people. then my friend grabbed a guy at a gas station in a full nelson while i poured gas all over him... then i threw a match on him but he wouldn't light... wow im pretty fucked up. -- i think this dream stemmed from A Clockwork Orange and Reservoir Dogs -- i watched both these movies in the same week. in one they beat up an old bum and in the other a cop gets gas poured all over him but never set on fire.

Personally, I say anything goes in a dream. If you think you are doing something wrong, you can always just change your mind and do something better. Don't beat yourself up later for something you regret doing, learn from your mistakes and move on.
There was a thread similar to this, where we discussed sex. If you have sex with someone in a dream, should you ask first or just do it. In other words, is the sex really consentual? People posted that they feel better asking first, less guilt.
I believe in the two realities theory and I think we should respect the other world jsut as much as we should this. So I would never do things such as murder or the like. Besides I couldt even do it even if I wanted to.
For instance I dont even want sex with somebody I dont love, I dont like it, I just dont enjoy it. I dont see why a person would have the desire to kill a person anyway, its sick. Here or there is the same to me. I dont know how many people over here actually believe in two realities but those who dont call me a sissy if you must but I respect what is out there.
I also say, if you go and kill people in your dreams(lets say you think its all in your head) this means you would like to kill people in real life to. But you dont do it because of the consequenses..and according to you there are no consequenses over there..so..you go on a killing spree.. :|
thats one theory. but in my dreams (not lucid, yet) my sences are dulled. i don't feel remorse when i kill a guy. when im having sex i don't ask, but i also don't force it.Quote:

Well, you are not even lucid yet so you dont even control your actions directly. Mabey once you become lucid or possibly come in touch with lies in the other reality you'll think diffirently, you'll see..just depends on how deep you will go
I never feel the need to kill anyone in a lucid dream, I just love everyone. The more I can visit these people, the better it is...
:yumdumdoodledum: :yumdumdoodledum: :yumdumdoodledum: Welcom Agray! :yumdumdoodledum: :yumdumdoodledum: :yumdumdoodledum:
Now that you are lucid, you are morally responsible for what you do in your dreams. Let your concious dictate what you feel is appropriate. It is true that you will never be caught of prosecuted for any actions you commit, ...BUT... you still have to live with yourself when you wake up!
for some people its all just in their heads... I dont feel that way.
Even if it is, I try to do the right things in both worlds, I am not repressed or anything. Honor is just important to me and I try to hold true to it here and in dream.
Honor is very important to me as well. For example, if you are one day in a fight in your dreams or in real life even and in the end you dominate your opponent and they beg for mercy or something, it is the honorable thing to do to give it to them i believe, but it is not honourable to kill them or humiliate them, That would make me feel rotten anyway. Thats the sort of thing that makes honor important to me here and in the dream world. Empathy is also important. Putting yourself in others shoes can be a good thing too. Treating others how you would like to be treated. :)Quote:

Not bein an ass or anything... I just noticed, this happens alot when I speak of honor.
How come everyone brings up battles and fights when honor is spoken of?
Not me! I have yet to fight. My personal sense of honor is in the way I treat and respect others. (you want to fight about it? :D )Quote:

I dont really think of fighting either... I think there is nothing honarable about a fight anyway, unless you are defending your loved ones.
For me honor is more of self respect, to be yourself, and know what you stand for and defend that. Do realise yourself, self realisation, self acceptance. To live by the values that are important to you, and do not let the opinion of others overwhelm you so that you stray away from the right path.
Also to feel apreciated by others because you do good, a mere honestly meant thank,a feeling of apreciation and respect, that is worth so much more then any amount of money or material reward, that to is honor, as is being selfless and sacrificing yourself for others

Sex without love is kind of like masterbation by proxy.....
I have to say I totally agree. To me, dreaming is evidence of what is going on in our heart (mind and soul). I think that it is inevitable that we as imperfect beings would have murderous, sexual, brutal, (etc.) dreams at times. However...if we are lucid, and thus in control of our "actions" or will during sleep, I believe there will still be real consequences for the decisions we make albeit somewhere down the line. I believe that as I'm aware during most of my dreams, and as lucid dreaming is a gift, I should make the most of it to strive for mental and spiritual improvement (along with a fervent desire for guidance from God). If this sounds out there, I would at least suggest doing something better with your LD time than shooting, stabbing, beating, bombing, or shagging someone else. :okbyenow:Quote:

you've obviously never played Grand Theft Auto :bigteeth:
Hmmm. I haven't but that still brings up a good point...
I guess I consider stuff like movies, video games etc. to be unreality and done for the sake of entertainment, thus not the same as making a "conscious" decision during a lucid dream to kill or maim, or have sex... Those things (video games etc.) are like virtual reality whereas lucid dreams are more like "alternate" reality. I'm not saying they are "real" -but I do believe they can indicate things about your personality that you should seek to improve or at least contemplate and learn from.
i'm just saying, acknowledge that it's a dream. i don't think it's necessarily a window into your soul if you're doing it for entertainment purposes. -- personally i wouldn't get to fucked up, but i don't think you're a bad person by any measure if you want to have fun in your dreams. -- just last night i had a dream where i was a pirate. we (fellow pirates) would board ships kill everyone and run back to our ship. then repeat doing that, if i was lucid i know i would have enjoyed myself more. and i wouldn't feel regret because i know it was just a dream, those people aren’t real. -- it really depends on the nature of the dream, some things i just won't have, but killing is ok in my book, maybe that’s just the video game desensitization talking but whateva.
I enjoy transcending limitations...
[edit]
...in fact, the very first thing I did the first time I had a "real" lucid dream was kill the guy I was standing next to. Not because I go all day wanting to kill people, but just to get over that pointless hang-up then and there and give myself over to the fact that what was happening wasn't real.
Well as its been discussed I don't truely take pride into killing someone in a dream just because I know I can do it, but if you considered doing it and go through with it just make sure you bring that person back to life. Its the only right thing left to do.
it might just all come down to the ethics you set upon yourself; boundaries if you will.

This is really bugging me,
what if you get the concent of the dream charcter in order to have sex.
I mean what if you ask the dream charecter if you can have sex with them and they say YES?
Shawndow :goodjob2: !
I assume that is what you do in your waking life also. Since you are not in prison, I guess you don't go around raping people!
If it is within your ethos to have consentual sex in this reality and you are asking permission in your dreams then you have not violated your honor.
However, if you believe it is wrong to have sex before marriage and you are doing it with permission in your dreams to get around your ethics then you have violated your honor.
I used to have sex in my dreams, but now am celebate most of the time. Point of honor for me. It is too much like cheating.
EDIT: However, I will have sex with my wife in dreams!
But that's not really your wife! :-PQuote:

Shawndow,
Well, if it's love, then wear yourself out! :)
Hope you meet the girl of your dreams tonight, but remember she will be your wife.
That limits your options both in the dream world and the waking world.
Man I'm glad someone finally showed up today, it's been DEAD here

1 word: Smooth
now that's somthing i got to thank about. I dont think im ready to commit yet.
Yeh it has been dead around here today
PS: You win this time seeker, but will meet again....yes will meet again
I've had dreams where I know I have cheated on my girlfriend, and I feel the guilt and I think; thank god I that wasn't real. But I really do learn lessons from my dreams.
I can make mistakes in my dreams and learn from them in the waking world. I would never cheat on my girlfriend; especially when I've experienced what it feels like in a dream.
Yeh but if its a LD you have no exscuse
yes you do. if its a LD then you know it's a dream, ergo you know its not real. that's like saying that if i go on a killing spree in a video game that makes me a killer. these are private thoughts that you keep as your own. i know the line between good and evil is blurry but what you do in your dreams doesn't effect anyone but yourself. if you cant live with it, don't do it. if you do something you regret, amend it. but don't carry over societies rules into your dreams or you'll never be free.Quote:

These ethical questions are very hard to answer, and need to be thought clearly out by every Lucid Dreamer.
Sometimes people feel no guilt when sexually engaging a DC(dream character) because they might 'ask them permission' but it MIGHT SO BE that you are manipulating their own free will as a dream character. [and this is based on the theory that the dream world is another reality]
If it is so another reality, honor is just as important here as it is there; so where to draw an ethical line is appropriate concerning not only sexual preferences and wants, but other issues.

You guys are into interesting territory now.
The mind just IS.
This is true whether you are awake, in an LD, or in another reality.
My ethos follows my mind, whereever it might travel to. But that is just me. It is up to all of you to develop your own ethos and then follow it.
That is true honor!
Yes Yes, seeker will meet again.

Concerning sex.
When its consentual dream or here, go for it...
If you are with somone, in either reality... it is kinda disrespectful of your mate.
Concerning battle.
The true warrior ends the battle before the sword is drawn.
Taking life is inexcusable unless you, yourself are being threatend...
And more importantly if those that you love and care for are being threatened, and not threatened with bang snaps... their lives are in danger. Somteimes its hard though, do you immobilise our oppenent? rending them helpless but not killing them? Do you take that chance? Will they come back with vengence in their heart? So do you instead kill them? to be done with it? Or will you know that you will still stand by your friends and family and be there when this enemy returns, what if your not there?
When you tell somone that you will always be there for them... most of the time, its already too late, if you are not by their side are you truely there for them? You can promise your service to them tell them that if in need they have but to call, but if you were truely there, they would not have had to call would they...
It sucks having to be far from those you love...
All I have to say... is be true to yourself.
If you do acts in your dream that you would not normaly do in life, which then is the true you? are you that murderous raping fiend?
Or are you the quiet person that just thinks it?
Or are you the one that helps those in need.
But here you just watch and dont lift a hand...
I realise that in my experience my first though it to help people... but I am thwarted by my own inaction and do nothing...
I could have done a simple thing to help another yesterday but I did not. I just went on my way... I wonder why I did not help them, I had nothing to do... and it actually kind of pissed me off... I myself have become part of the Turning away... and have decided right now, that its over, I will do my best to follow those instincts. Im tired of being a man of inaction.
I wasn't talking about the fighting being honourable, i was talking about showing mercy/compassion towards others, but fighting was the only example that came to mind.Quote:

I started taking a look at myself the other day and realised that i have tendancies to be inactive when it comes to helping others as well. There are so many people that will not even lift a finger to help others. For example, one time when i was in the car on the way home one day i saw a girl riding her bike and she put a wheel at the wrong angle and fell off. She looked like she was having trouble, i think she hurt her knee or something. Just after she fell off and was still on the ground, two guys who were walking by just looked at her as they walked past and didn't try to help her back up. I thought that was a bastard thing to do, luckily and older man and woman helped her up and made sure everything was alright.
I mean i would have tried to help and i think a lot of the people here would have too. I think we all probably dont do enough to help people. I mean I'm no good samaritan, i've not helped many people and regretted it. I should follow my instincts to help others as well.
Ok since this thread is based around ethics in dreams, I have a question to pose. What about suicide, or at least the act preceding death in suicide? I've been thinking about some of the things I'd like to do, and I would like to commit seppuku, which is ritualistic disembowelment. And is it possible to convince a character, in a lucid dream, to become your Kaishaku-nin, even if you believe it's against that character's morals? A Kaishaku-nin is someone who beheads you at your signal during seppuku. So...can you kill yourself in a lucid dream?
Chris.
thats a sensitive question. suicide is really messed up in my book.
an old girlfriend walked in on her mother just as she pulled the trigger of a shotgun that was in her mouth...
and friend walked in his living room only to find his mother swinging from the ceiling...
i dont like it one bit. but i wont judge. if you can live with yourself after you do it, then more power to you.
WOW! :holycrap:Quote:

I've lost three family members to suicide in the past five years :(
Some say there is a genetic predisposition to it in some families. I don't even want to try it, since there have been many times I have stood looking over the edge of the abyss....
One of the things that holds me back is knowing (first hand) the havoc it wrecks with a family. Strong emotions all conflicting:
Loss/Hearbreak/Anger/Betrayal/Hatered.
Not only is suicide insane it's downright wrong. I'm not saying I haven't considered it... I think many if not all people consider it at least once in their lifetime (due to the delusion of despair), but life is too much of an awesome and precious thing! The manner of death in seppuku is also one of the most degrading ways in which to die and is usually done to someone who has been dishonorable (if I remember correctly). You can talk about honor and retribution in death all you want -it's still a sick and asinine ritual in my book.Quote:

Considering that dreams are such a vast and unexplored field, why set a boundaries in it?
Ethics, morality, and consequence for actions/thoughts still apply in the dream realm, though they appear to be unchecked or inconsequential right now. And when it concerns murder... why NOT set boundaries?
Ethics is such a difficult topic :)
As i know for myself - there is always a choice in a dream.
few days ago i had a dream with a teacher(guide) in
it. Suddenly teacher turned into a demon and asked if I'll become his
allie/minion. Few variants of reply swirled through my head. One had a
totally holy feeling to it, it was a pretty long monologue, concerning 'not
betraying your beliefs. and will to fight evil in any form.' Strange. I said it,
in a heavenly and holy voice.
another reply was pretty long as well and had
a demonic feeling and i felt red smoke coming out of it.
And i said it in a very tricky and deceiving voice: " Yes, I will serve you
master since I feel great power within you..."
there was a third line, which had no feeling in it, and i said it in a normal
voice - why should i join you?
This dream was weird, but i felt ALL sides. And when i said this things I really meant what i said... It leaves me confused - what I've chosen?
Woa Freeky.
LOL i would talk to luciouse about that, hes funney when it comes to Dream Charecters.
Suicde is wrong.
Did you know that the bible does not support Suicide. In fact, i think somwhere in it, it says somthing like, Its not your life to take. and that you will go to hell or somthin
"WHAT, i havn't said anything for a while"
Actually if you will look deeper into the bible you will find no references regarding suicide.
All that stuff about "suicide is wrong" came from christian preachers during medieval times. Imagine the shitty life of a peasant during this times...Hunger, no freedom, diseases, rat infested houses, slums... The way out? suicide.
imagine the part of the master of this peasants, who lives in a good mansion and enjoys good food/wine, have pleasures and dont have to work - how do i hold my peasants from committing suicide? torture, beatings dont work... Yes! I will go to my friend, a priest and he will do the same thing we do to little children. - He'll make them think that by escaping this world they will feel even worse...
I'm not preaching suicide - this stuff is from my suicide research, when i felt really shitty...
intrsting... very intrsting
the bible says a lot of stuff that i'm pretty sure you don't abide by...Quote:

Don't cut your hair nor shave. (Leviticus 19:27)
just to name a few.

suicide hurts everyone. but in a dream it could be "fixed" i guess.

Jake:
Ritual laws of the Old Testament no longer apply to Christian believers since the law was perfectly fulfilled in Christ. What about the moral law (10 Commandments, etc.)? These still stand in principle and it should be any believer's desire to abide by them as they grow in maturity, but they are not requirements for salvation...
Oh, and Shawn, just a suggestion -Maybe instead of saying that "I think the Bible says this or that," look it up man! :reading:
Seppuku requires balls - it's absolutely agonizing, and it's completely under your own control until your Kaishaku-nin decapitates you. I'm sure that voluntarily holding your hand in boiling water is a walk in the park by comparison. Not for me, thanks. I don't think you'd get anything near the full effect in a dream anyway.
Last night I had something of an ethical problem in my dream. I actually decided to kill someone, but then changed my mind out of pity for him. At the time he seemed rather real to me. This still all seems a little silly to me in retrospect. It's all an illusion, and I believe the situation was precipitated more by delusion than morality. I was having a little trouble passing through walls at the time, as well, and they were just as imaginary as the people in my dream were, and on top of that I had a somewhat difficult time convincing myself that I was dreaming to begin with...
Nothing but fantasies to be disabused of if you ask me. Why humor my own irrationality by pretending that dream characters are real?

would you abide by the book deuteronomy? sorry i'm not to savvy in the bible department, so i don't know what you would or would not abide by. -- it was my understanding that the bible was considered the infallible word of god. it was not just written by man, but rather written by god through man. so since god is all knowing and cannot be wrong, why is this book no longer applicable? ... im sorry to have hi-jacked the thread but i'd like to get this off my chest. i hold nothing against people who are christian, catholic, mormon, whatever. i just dont think you should use your beliefs to scold someone who might not see the world the same way you do.

Lol good stuff guys.
Suess I have an overtly large consience. Also the fact that I see the dream world as another reality adds to that consience there, also I have faced concequences that added to it too..
I duno why its different to me but it is, there are reactions to your actions there, just like here.
Besides, thats what Video games are for, Yes I play GTA3 and yes I am a Bad.. bad.. man =)
lol you see the Dave shapell show? Where he went on about GTA lol classic haha.
yeah! that chapelle show was funny funny. how he made the guns appear and stuff and then at the end "ok, bye honey"
Regardless of what reality or plane, suicide will be invane..lalala
What im trying to say, suicide is useless. It doesnt solve problems as you will have to live with yourself and your negative hate for yourself in the next dimension so I woulnt recommend doing it due to a shitty life.
And if you do it in the astral well I havnt completely read everything so I dont really know the reason but you know how I think about it..over there to, its just the same as over here. Like seri said "there are reactions to your actions there, just like here." And I vet those reactions wont be good, unless you live among demons ^_^

Those things in Deuteronomy WERE applicable to the nation of Israel (past tense). Should Christians still abide by them? Nope. The Old Testament in all its intricacies and supposed contradictions points to one thing... the coming of a savior (messiah) who would deliver His people (Israel) from the bondage of sin -which is only made evident by the laws of God (in other words, we do not know that what we do is wrong unless it is revealed to us by God because we are blind to sin). Yes, I believe the Bible is the infallible Word, but that doesn't mean that it should be literally abided by or interpretted -especially in regards to the Old Testament. I believe that the "harsh" instances where Israel was instructed by God to kill still have value - They show the seriousness of God's will/attitude toward sin and the weight of his judgment of sin... and eventually, the utter importance of Christ and his sacrifice. I only "scold" Shawndow because I know he and I share the same intrinsic beliefs. I would never scold someone who does not believe. At the same time, I will not water down what I believe for the sake of political correctness. I state my beliefs plainly as they are, as long as there is a question or an interest. If that "interest" is to degrade or to argue for the sake of argument... Figgit aboudit. 8) At the same time, I think we should not be overly conscious of political correctness ("tolerance" ? ) to the point where I stifle or compromise my obligation to be a witness and testimony for Christ. Whew! I'll pm any further comments unless the're directly related to the thread...Quote:

would you abide by the book deuteronomy? sorry i'm not to savvy in the bible department, so i don't know what you would or would not abide by. -- it was my understanding that the bible was considered the infallible word of god. ... i just dont think you should use your beliefs to scold someone who might not see the world the same way you do.
and this is where we all say
AMEN
PS: doesn't EL quapo in Espanol mean somthing along the lines of poop or bat poop

eh..sorry if i made a big fuss over the whole ritualistic suicide issue. i've just got such a widespread imagination and i dont know if i want to put limits on it when i finally set it free.
chris.
Some of those crazy rules(usually Levitical laws) in the Old Testament were for the people who had no sanitation, and disease was destroying thousands upon thousands of people, and *GOD* had to set up numerous laws to insure cleanliness....just read it you'll see, and dig deaper, those are not laws for us to follow today, just laws for people who had no sense of the word "sanitation".
-oh and the best statment in spanish would either be-
1. LA PONDEROSA (the victorious)
2. LOS POLLOS LOCOS (the crazy chickens)
(there is some accent in there, i dont know how to add it but going to the translation site but im too lazy!)
