Hey, who hit the cymbals?!?

The other day we had a three and a half hour bus ride home from a football game (I'm in the 200+ person marching band) and I was tired, so I decided to rest a little. I was sitting in the seat in front of one o my good friends, and next to our band director. I was about to fall asleep when somebody hit some cymbals together LOUDLY. I jumped up and said to the kid behind me "were those cymbals on our bus, or another driving by?". Man the looks I got. Everyone just sorta stared at me and the general concensus was "what cymbals". A minute later I realized 1) My band director wasn't screaming, he hadn't even blinked, and 2) all the instruments were packed up and accounted for on a trailer about a mile ahead. It soon became apparent there were no cymbals, so I just dropped the subject. I know I wasn't dreaming, because the entire time I could hear my friends playing games, and anyways I'm very in tune to what stage of sleep I'm at. I was close to sleeping, but not quite there. Has anybody else ever experienced this kind of thing? It freaked me out, I couldn't even approach sleep the rest of the way home.

Hmmm, how tired were u exactly? If u were sleep derved then it was probably just auditory hallucinations.

This is quite common, I think. My theory was that you were into some serious hypnogogic imagery at the time.

i agree with seeker.

although its possible your friends were just messing about with you, its more proboble that it was HI or a low-level dream

(i sometimes get low-level dreams, which are vague dreams you experience in between deep sleep and REM sleep. sometimes they are accompanied by images, usually still images or very short ones like you were catching a glimpse of conciousness after eing knocked out but usually they are just noises)

I can tell you for sure it wasn't a trick from my friends, because my no-nonsence band director was right there, and he would have flipped out, but the low level sleep Hypnogogic Sound stuff sounds possible. I'm not usually sleep deprived, but the night before I was up for a football game really late, which makes it definantly possible.
