      Family dreaming?

Ok, today at lunch my brother started talking about how he had a cool dream. Then he started talking about the fact that he realized he was in a dream and could do almost anything, at first I thought he was just joking. He then started talking more and more about how he realized he was dreaming and how he made himself do things in his dreams, many of which are on this site. I then told him about lucid dreaming and dream recall, for 40 minutes he recalled dreams and when he has been lucid in the past 5 years or so. For a 11 year old kid I found that he must be a natural and thought everyone could it, that it was no skill.

As surprising as this was, it didn't stop there. The dream that led to his lucid state was almost exactly like the one I recalled when I woke up. I was chasing a boy, whom I couldn't recognize in the fog. I was chasing him in the jungle with dual uzi's (most likely because I had played a game with this ability for a long time before bed) and he had some sort of lazer gun.

My brother had described himself being in the jungle and chased by some guy. I thought this was a mere coincidence until he talked about his laser gun and how he couldn't describe the person chasing him because of the fog. Somehow he realised that he was dreaming because he knew there was no way he could be in a jungle. I don't remember anything beyond the point of chasing this boy in the fog so I don't know what exactly happened or if the boy did anything strange.

Before a few weeks ago I would have laughed at this, suggesting it impossible. But I learned of lucid dreaming not long ago and his descriptions of how he realized he was in a dream and his reality tests were so much alike to the ones on this website.

I mainly want to know, was our dream just a coincidence? We often think very alike and he'll say things I was just thinking about and vice-versa. Logic wants to tell me it was a coincidence, but how is all that possible? Sorry if this is hard to understand, I just find this really really weird and I feel jealous that my younger brother can recall his dreams and sometimes have a lucid state when I can barely even recall my own.

Edit; Sorry if this is in the wrong section, but I wanted to write down all my thoughts I had before most of them went away and felt General Discussion would be most fitting at the time. Feel free to move it if it belongs somewhere else.

Hi Havock! I think this is a perfect forum for this thread no worries!

That is very cool the experience you and your brother had. I believe that younger children probably have the ablity to lucid dream and often think nothing of it. The skill sometimes gets lost as we get older. I believe anyone can do it weather it is a inborn skill or something learned. Even if you hardly remember your dreams I think with practice you will be able to become lucid in your dream land if that is your desire.

As to sharing dreams... I just think that is so awesome. That would be something I wish I could do. There is a member on the board who's sister (also a member) can enter family members dreams at will. At least that is what I gather. I would love to be able to do something like that. What I would say is test it out with your brother. Set it up that you are both going to try to dream about a certain thing or place and see if you can meet up. I would love to hear if you have success. Also, it may be that your brother can enter your dreams so have him concentrate on you when he finds himself lucid. These are just some ideas... I hope they work and I hope to hear about what happens next!

it's just so weird, if this had happened a few weeks ago I would have laughed it off and stated it impossible. But after learning people can have lucid dreams I think the mind can do a lot more through dreams.

      *grins* dream-sharing, awesome.

i've heard that it's actually fairly common for twins to share dreams, and i've heard cases of good friends or lovers managing to get into each other's dreams, but i'd never thought of a family connection beyond the twins thing.... as said above, awesome.

I think it would be wonderful for shared dreams to be a reality, to bad I don't have the faith

I don't know if it happened again, I woke up and couldn't remember anything. Nothing at all. I asked my brother and he talked about some of his dreams but none of them sparked anything for me. Maybe once my dream recall gets a lot better we can try.

Work on becoming lucid, havock. my lucid dreams were few until i started thinking of it more often while awake. check out reality checks. i found the timed one the most effective. every thirty minutes or every hour, whatever, do a reality check. do it without fail. eventually your brain will get used to remembering to do a reality check and you'll do them in your sleep. then maybe you can make some progress. it's hard to look for your brother when you're not even aware yr dreaming. What happened the other night was extremely cool. what would be even cooler was if you could train yourselves to do it whenever you wanted! or at least do it again.

      Shared dreaming! How great!

I wouldn't expect it to happen every single night, but I guess it doesn't hurt to continue to ask him every day in hopes that one day you will be so lucky again...

Enid is right, you should try and work on your lucid skills so that you can find him easier. Imagine what you two can do together if you are both lucid...that would be sweet.

P.S. Tell your brother to try and will himself to your dreams or look you up next time he is lucid....it could work...

I know it's true - done it myself!!

When I was a kid I remember my sister described a dream about being chased by 3 bears (yes THE 3 bears! ) through a field, over a sty (steps over a fence) and into a street outside a supermarket. She was with me and two of our friends, then she hid behind a lamp post (cartoon style) and hid from the bears - then she lost me and the others and woke up. It was wierd - the bears, the field, our friends, the sty, the supermarket - all matched my dream!!! But in my dream when we got to the supermarket I went inside and started looking for my mum. That's when I woke up!

Haven't had one since and I'm in my mid twenties now. But maybe that explains why I've been able to take to lucid dreaming quite quickly? (I started 2 weeks ago after reading this site, and have now had 4!)

Placebo had one too, aparently. His wife WILD'd into his dream! ... now that's wierder as they're not related (although having said that - have you seen his avatar???)

Yep - my wife intentionally entered my dream and shared it. I haven't heard of a similar experience yet...
Was damn cool at the time, but haven't been able to get the same circumstances again (yet)

Imagine what you two can do together if you are both lucid...that would be sweet. [/b]
Yep... such a pity I wasn't lucid in mine
I told my wife what to do, if she ever finds herself in the right state of mind again...

P.S. Tell your brother to try and will himself to your dreams or look you up next time he is lucid....it could work...[/b]
Definitely possible - thats what my wife did.
However she was in a 'zenlike state' (as she puts it), and hasn't managed to get back there again (esp while Ive been in REM)

But in my dream when we got to the supermarket I went inside and started looking for my mum[/b]
Often there are tiny discrepancies, leaving the dream about 99% accurate
In my shared dream, there was also one tiny discrepancy, that seems to be possibly related to our sleeping positions

now that's wierder as they're not related (although having said that - have you seen his avatar???) [/b]

Yeah, for some reason I haven't been able to remember any of my dreams lately. I think my brother is too young to will himself to do it, he either falls asleep right as he lays down or stays up til 3.

It seems this is a very rare thing, so I guess I should be lucky. To bad he was lucid and I wasn't...

that is precisely why you should let him know to try and make you aware that it is a dream next time he finds you in a dream...hopefully it will actually be you he finds and not just a DG as you...
