Sucker-punched by my own reality check -- what does THAT mean?

So for the past couple weeks I've been training myself to look at my left hand as a reality check to see if I'm wearing my wedding ring. I never take it off so I figured it would be a good way to tell if I'm dreaming.

Last night I had a dream in which I actually did it -- I intentionally looked down at my left hand to see if my wedding ring was there.

Guess what? It was -- but the diamond and emeralds had vanished from their settings and the whole ring was crumbling to pieces.

So what is THAT supposed to mean?

Are the barriers preventing me from achieving regular lucid dreams beginning to crumble? ... Or was my subconscious just rubbing my nose in the fact that I couldn't recognize my own darned reality check symbol for what it was?

First of all, that's probably not the most effective reality check,
because if you're always wearing you're wedding ring, chances are you'll be wearing it in your dreams.

Concerning the crumbling ring, I'd say that symbolizes something else...
However, I'm not a strong believer in dream interpretation, so I wouldn't worry too much about it.
      It was familiar to me
The smoke too thick to breathe
      The tile floors glistened
      I slowly stirred my drink

Thanks for the input and support -- much appreciated.

OK, so I will focus on looking for text and mirrors as RCs instead.

It's funny... the one sure-fire RC for me has always been flying. As soon as I'm flying in a dream, I become lucid and have an awesome time. But I have so many dreams in which I'm not flying and I would like to become lucid in them, too!

      Hopefully practice makes perfect...

Be sure to really scrutinize your reality checks. Look for distortions in different places. If you see yourself in a mirror, don't just check to see if it's you. Check to see if you're in the same clothes. Check to see if you can look yourself in the eye. Check to see if she does what you do. And lok for any bodily distortions, as well.

      Best of luck~

wow i think i would be kinda creeped out if my mirror image didnt copy my actions. sounds like an inspiration for a film

anyway i think its cool that you decided with a reality check that would be like new. the more rc's we can bring into this community, the better. ofcourse they have to be good.

Using your wedding ring is a funny coincidence to me.

I hate wearing a watch, so instead I look at my wrist as if I'm checking the time throughout the day with the hopes that in my dream I'll be wearing a watch.

I haven't acheived full lucidity yet but I've had low level lucids my whole life and hope the reality checks will change that.

      HAve to wait and see
I wouldn't be paranoid if they weren't out to get me!

... There's the rub! Last night I had yet another dream about my wedding ring (that's the third in more than a week). Some guy was hitting on me in a just-joking-but-not-really sort of way and I kept having to wave my ring in his face and say, "Yeah, ha ha, I know you're just joking but DUDE, I'm married. Give it up."

I even remember admiring how the reflection of the overhead light broke into a million fragments of light inside the diamond's belly. So my brain was doing a great job of shoving that "dream sign" right into my face... but all I could think was, "Ooooh, sparkly."

So is the persistence of this dream sign a good thing? Is it burrowing itself into my sleeping mind so I'll eventually be able to break on through to the other side and realize I'm dreaming?

Or does my repeated inability to recognize it for what it is mean that I picked a real stinker?

Other notable repetitions I've picked up in my dreams lately: laptops acting strangely -- showing gobbledygook instead of actual words on the monitors or giving me absolutely ridiculous search engine results. Also: friends I haven't seen in a long time, and dogs, and rats.

      Yeah. Rats.
