Lightbulb Chant to Improve Dream Recall?

Back in the day, before I really knew about LD, I was just trying to improve my dream recall in general and I stumbled across a chant that's supposed to help.

When you first wake up, you're supposed to not move (where have we heard that before -- LOL) and then if you don't remember any dreams, chant "roam goam" over and over, really drawing out the vowel sounds, until images from your dream start to appear. It really, really helped me at the time, but I'd forgotten all about it! Now that I'm trying to have lucid dreams, it seems like it would make sense to use it.

I wonder if chanting something simple like that just keeps your mind clear long enough for you to remember the dreams. Anyway, I just wondered if anyone else had heard of this and also wanted to put that out there in case it would help anyone with dream recall. That's the only thing I can help with since LDing is eluding me! LOL.

Repetitive chanting can be effective to induce lucid dreaming or certain dream themes, but not for recall. After seeing the influence repetitive flash games have had on my dreams, I truly believe chanting would be a good method to reach lucidity. But you'd have to chant some real words that declare your intent, not gibberish.

Chanting wouldn't work with recall because recall is a delicate act of retracing your path through a jungle of interconnecting archetypes, one leading to the next in a chain. That chant introduces a new archetype that has absolutely no connection to the dream. When you focus on the chant, there is no way you can find your way back to your dreams.

That's why you're not supposed to move or do anything when you wake up, because as soon as you see or do something, that invokes a new archetype which has no connection to your dreams.

It's also why we sometimes get sudden dream flashes during the day when we encounter archetypes that do have a direct link to our dreams.

      Really? "Roam Goam" worked?

Might be the gibberish then. Doesn't invoke any archetypes because it doesn't make any sense.

Maybe that chanting just extended your efforts longer than you normally would have done. Really you only fail to remember dreams when you give up. A lot of times I have to fight for my dreams, but as long as you don't give up (and have the time) they will come.

I think for a lot of people, if they can't remember any easily accessible dreams right off the bat, they figure they have no recall and give up. But you can almost always find your way back to some part of the dream if you keep trying.

If I start remembering nothing and do this, I get fragments. if i start with fragments, I get the basic plot of the dream. Haven't tried anything else, but it really could be a placebo making me TRY harder.

Yeah, it's always worked for me. I don't pretend to know why, but I think, for me, it just stops my mind from getting sucked into other thoughts (like what I'm going to wear, what I have to do at work that day, etc). That would be my guess -- just keeping all of those thoughts from intruding gives the images from the dreams a chance to surface.

It's the same for me, Mjs961 -- I don't get the whole dream, but a couple of impressions and then from there, I can usually recall more and more! Glad to hear it helps!

This actually sounds reasonable, and I might try it (if I remember) tonight, since I have god awful recall. (or at least I think so) To those who don't think this could work, (I'm looking at you, The Cusp) I've read that chanting focuses and relaxes your mind. It keeps you from thinking random thoughts that would chase away the dream memories, but Is to mindless to do so itself. (Or at least thats what I would assume.)

      Hmmm, interesting.

I always remember like 1 or 2 dreams per night.

But I will try this and see if I can get it to like 3 or 4

Also, for clarification, is it pronounced "Roam Gome"?

Yep, it's like "roam", the regular word, and the "goam" rhymes with that.

I'm really glad to see it works for others! I was afraid maybe I was just weird. LOL.

I get dream flashes alot. Chanting at night "I will remember my dreams" help a lot for me. If I have a dream about swimming and I don't remember it in the morning, the whole dream comes back when I see water.
