      A note on Dream Signs

This was something that was never adequately explained to me, and I've been on DV for four months now. After reading through ETWOLD, it has finally been explained to me what a dream sign is. A dream sign does NOT have to be a SPECIFIC recurring element in one's dreams. Up until now, I have always assumed this to be true. In reality, however, any small thing out of the ordinary can constitute as a dream sign. LaBerge suggests searching for dream signs under certain categories, e.g. strange objects, situations, characters, settings, etc. Look for the most common types of oddities in your dreams, and spend the most time focusing on the top two or three categories.

I have long had a hard time trying to identify a personal dream sign, as I have very few recurring elements in my dreams. Now, however, I have been able to identify several solid ones based on category, and I now know what to look out for in my dreams.

Just my two cents on the matter. Please, feel free to critique/discuss/etc. Quietly protesting the 10 character limit.

      Good stuff.

My DS is that my eyes are open and I can see... Which would not be true if you were sleeping.

Good point. Training yourself to spot dream signs, and by dream signs i mean things out of the ordinary in dreams is a very tedious task. It takes a lot of real life input before it carries over to your dreams. It was very difficult for me to become lucid by doing RC's but i managed it, however i found that the quality was not that good and that it was better to just WILD.

Finding my dream sign(s) is number four on my list. Thanks to your information, I can now do this with more ease. Thank you :3

      I like this thread.

      From ETWOLD(page 47):

      EXERCISE: CATALOGING YOUR DREAMSIGNS

      1. Keep a dream journal

Keep a journal in which you record all of your dreams. When you have collected at least a dozen dreams, proceed to the next step.

      2. Catalog your dreams

While continuing to collect dreams, mark the dreamsigns in your dream report. Underline them, and list them after each dream description.

      3. Classify each dreamsign using the dreamsign inventory

Next to each dreamsign on your list, write the name of its category from the dreamsign inventory. For instance, if you dreamed of a person with the head of a cat, this would be a form dreamsign.

      4. Pick target dreamsign categories

Count how many times each dreamsign category(inner awareness, action, form, or context) occurs and rank them by frequency. Whichever occurs most often will be your target dreamsing category in the next step. If there is a tie between categories, pick one that appeals to you.

      5. Practice to look for dreamsigns while you are awake

Make a habit of examining your daily life for events that fit under your dreamsign category. For instance, if your target category is action, study how you, other people, animals, objects, and machine act and move. Become thoroughly familiar with the way things usually are in waking life. This will prepare you to notice when something unusual happens in a dream.
