Is ANYTHING possible in a LD?

Ok so I've given some thought to the idea of trying to make possible the impossible in my LDs. But I've noticed there are two categories of impossible the first one that everyone talks about: flying, shapeshifting, being beheaded and doing the robot dance afterwards etc which is merely impossible in real life but pretty easily dreamed and then theres this second category of what I believe to be the truly impossible (and I'd like to see if anyone agrees/disagrees with me): being omnipotent (like being everywhere at the same time) and visualizing 4th dimensions or higher and having multiple conversations or doing more than one thing consciously at the same time.

I came to the conclusion that you can't do everything that your mind conceptualizes, I mean sure I understand the idea of being everywhere at the same time but I couldn't do it even in my imagination world and sure I've read books on higher dimensions particulary the 4th dimension but theres no way of ever imagining it even in my dreams.

So at the end of the day their really are limits to what you can do in your LDs IMO.

Not that I want to sound ungrateful for the amazing possiblilties and fun you can still have though!

I actually have had a LD where I had split into two different people and was doing two different things at once. I had two different fields of vision and it was unlike anything I had ever experienced before. It is somewhere in my DJ...I'm too lazy to look right now :cheeky: . I too couldn't imagine (even now after I've done it) having two different fields of vision with neither getting in the way of (or distracting) the other, but I did it in my dream. I didn't even try to do it on purpose, it just happened. However, I have tried to do it again with no success. I've also read in someones DJ here, where they performed this (can't remember who it was). SOmeone also performed 360 degree vision, which I also couldn't imagine. The brain is an extraordinarily powerful tool.

Anything short of useing electronics and turning on and off lights. :zocks:

Yea, I've accomplished both. Don't let other peoples' ideas limit your LD abilities though, it's not worth it.

Exactly. Why would you be able to fly if you can't simply turn on and off a light.

Try it out with the full extent that you actually think it's possible, and it will happen! :)

Yeah, electronics and lights can be annoying and not work properly sometimes but most people have used electronics or turned lights on/off in a dream before.

No, it's an actual myth. I think Hearne started it, and most people will agree that it's an absolute LD law even though it's nothing of the sort :( Hopefully it doesn't seem like it is because people are coming around...

Ive got some too. Actually, I have yet to fail at doing either. Electronics always work perfectly for me, even my watch (more than once it has even actually kept the correct time, or at least very close!), and turning the lights on and off in an LD is no more difficult than flipping a switch IRL...I dont know. Maybe its just because I work around electronics so much and know how they work well enough to be able to duplicate it in a dream. And I almost never forget what a location looks like, so I can just remember how things should look when the light comes back on.

Thats strange, Well i have never been able to do either. :roll:

The one time I tried to flip a switch in an LD it didn't work. But I also had heard that it didn't work...

Shift speaks the truth. Say, you hear from someone that light switches don't work in dreams. You find it interesting and you want to try it out for yourself. In your dream you go and attempt to turn on the switch expecting it not to work because that is what you have heard. In dreams, expectations and beliefs can run the dream world. The light switch doesn't work in your dream and now you tell someone else, and they tell someone else, and so on. I too heard that light switches didn't work when I first started LDing. Now in my dreams, if I want them to work...they work. Remember 90% (roughly estimated by yours truly :cheeky:) of lucid dreaming is in your head. Good luck to everyone!

Yeah but the person who started this 'myth' must have experienced this problem all by himself without hearing about it, then believing everyone has this too in their dreams, he shared it as a way to determine your dreaming.

Look at flying, no-one goes around saying that you can't fly in your dreams but still some people have trouble doing it (including myself althouth that was in non-LDs). Same thing applies to light switches and electronics it depends on the individual.

But I do agree that reading that light switches don't work can actually cause the problem because you assume so but not that its a 'myth' altogether simply cos you don't have trouble with it.

I think the reason that you cannot understand a concept such as 260 degree vision is because your brain has never experienced it. That does not make it impossible, but you cannot imagine it because you have no basis on which to imagine it.

You can imagine a purple man, becuase you've seen people, and you've seen the color purple. Although, taht's obviously impossible, as no one has purple skin.

However, hook the brain up to 360 degree eyes, and it could indeed see in 360 degree vision. If you give yourself the ability to do so in your dream, your brain will carry out the simulation, and you will percieve something that you may not be able to imagine.

About the electronic/lights topic..
I can't turn on lights in my LD's using light switches. But I was lucid in a dream once, and I felt very heavy and dizzy and couldn't stabilize, so I went to the nearest computer, and actually went into dreamviews to search about what do to in that situation xD, it was pretty interesting.

I had a similar dream to that one.

Except, I turned on the PC and the screen came up saying "You are Dreaming." When I turned to turn the PC off, a bunch of monitors were stacked on each other with "You are Dreaming." on all of them. Sadly, it freaked me out and I woke up.

It depends from person to person IMO. Some can do it because they have disciplined the mind to visualize it even without experiencing it in real life but it takes alot of effort. Like for me I can't make things appear but people here keep saying they can...so I guess it can be done. The categories actually there are like you said 2. But from what I know...the 2 are real memory expereinces stored in your subconcious and the other one which is pure idea/thought which you din't really experience it but are aware of it. Things like the 4th dimension and other stuff that your mind makes up/imagine belongs to the latter and is tough..because dreams are very experience based. The 4th dimension is also abstract, it is not a real experience and so is the idea of lucid dreaming but lucid dreaming has more substance to dream about since there are evidence/material that it can be done and you know what it is because you experienced it yourself. So it's very complex as to Y certain things are dreamable but not everything. I can go on talking about it but it would lead to confusion cause it's very complex to put into words..:roll:.

It is possible to do anything in a dream that your mind can conceptualize, and to the extent of detail that the conceptualization goes. If right now you cannot even begin to imagine what 4 dimensions might look like, chances are likely that you will not be able to experience it in a dream either. If you try, you may come up with something that upon reflection you know is just nonsense, or you may come up with something that approximates it in some small way but not significantly enough to feel like you've actually done it.

If you can imagine it though, then it is surely possible.

Fourth dimension is easy. Fifth dimension is harder but not too hard. Anything higher I haven't done. Dreams are actually very fourth dimensional already.

Some things may take a little more effort but I think the simplest answer is "if you can imagine it, you can do it", although, yeah, sometimes you unexpectedly end up doing stuff you never imagined. :cheeky:

I get the feeling that the problem a lot of people around here have with flying comes from the fact that they keep getting told "oh, don't expect to just take off flying in your first dream 'cause it's hard"... I wonder if it's not an even more widespread myth than non-working light switches.:whyme:

Yeah, people tend to be able to do it much easier if they just do it without thinking that it will be hard before hand or even thinking about it.

well it seems the general concensus is that if you can't do something or you find it difficult then its because you have heard it was difficult but I still think you can struggle with things all on your own.

Right, it is all about freeing your mind. It doesn't matter if you heard that it was difficult from someone else or from yourself. It is like in the Matrix when Morpheus jumps across to the rooftop across the street and tells Neo to free his mind and jump. Learning these things is just freeing your mind. I think the great thing about lucid dreaming is not that you can gratify all your cravings and desires but that you can free your mind. That is my mission.

I don't disagree with this. I just disagree that the light switch/electronics problem is a myth (ie an invented claim), its just an example of someone who hasn't 'freed their mind' to allow proper control of it as you said Dannon.

Yea I would agree with that, dreams are already a lot a like the 4th dimension. Its easy to experience dreams in the higher dimensions, because dreams are really chaotic. You teleport around randomly, are in multiple places at once, and do all sort of weird stuff.

I think the light switch myth is just an extension of the, you can't read in dreams myth. With an updated appearance, because people don't read as much.

Saying 'it's impossible' to read or turn off the lights is close minded. But it can be hard. Frankly I never cared to even try to turn the lights on or off. I just call in the light! Let there be light! But it is hard to read, but I have done it.

Have you tried the clapper? That's worked for me in the past. ;)

I use laptops in lucids and I have read whole pages of text on screens and on paper. It is more rare but it's possible.


As for the limitations of dreams, I'd say that they're mainly only limited by the dreamer. That is, if the dreamer has certain mental blocks or fears or limitations like no visualization skills, then they will find they can't do certain things.

Well, For me two things don't add up. Its easy to visualize lights on and off because its physically easy to do while awake, also i was not told beforehand that i couldn't.

May be because in all my dreams the contrast of light and dark is much more extreme then in waking life and may be effecting my in dream function.

I agree in that in some cases a non functioning lightswitch could be the result of an unconcouis belief that it will not work because said dreamer heard it would not work. I however believe that it depends on 2 things: The dreamers familiarity with the area they wish to lighten, and also the dreamers experience with LDing. Back when I was first experimenting with LDing I found it much easier to work a light switch in a familiar area such as a room in my home. I found it much more difficult in a strange invironment. I think this is because I was familiar with the layout of the room and it was easy for my brain to manifest the room at the speed of light. Trying to turn on a lightswitch is very similar to imagining things into existance which many people find difficult. It is even harder to imagine an entire room into existance. This all of couse depends on the darkness level of the room before the switch is turned on. I find it easier to work a light switch when I can make out the room to some degree before the light is turned on. If your really having trouble lighting the area your at in during a LD, try yelling "LET THERE BE LIGHT" with confidence that it will lighten the room. Or make the light switch a knob, that slowely lights the room not all at once. These have both worked for me.

I'm sorry but I must have missed the post with that guy who said all lights and electronics are impossible in dreams.

If I find it I'll reply and say that is a myth.

I think electronic may not work 100 percent if the dream is not LUCID, but may change once you are

I have had troubles with my camera and my PC in dreams but I think it just mirrors my stupid luck in waking life, not some fault of dream electronics. :cheeky:

I used an iPhone in an non-LD. The scrolling through screens worked perfectly with exactly the same motion as in real life. The screen was a little dark. I didn't make any calls or used any apps, but it seemed to work fine.

I believe that anything is possible in a lucid dream, you just have to believe you can do it. In a lucid dream I had last night, I tried flying but it was all black and I didn't move from my spot. This could be misleading, seeing as I got a little excited when I realized I was dreaming.
