Sleep paralysis (often abbreviated to SP) is what stops your body moving while you are asleep. Normally it happens after you fall asleep, but people attempting the WILD (Wake Initiated Lucid Dream) technique focus on keeping their mind concious as they fall asleep, and are therefore concious while the sleep paralysis begins.
However, you can become lucid using many other methods, such as reality checking in your dream, which requires no sleep paralysis whatsoever! :)
(And this forum is fine for this subject!)
