No need to try one exclusively. Try a bunch at the same time:
Keep your journal up to date and identify dreamsigns
Perform reality checks during the day
Meditate, BWGEN, hypnosis during the day
Do MILD at bedtime
WILD or WBTB during the night.
When trying to shoot down an airplane, the best thing you can do is to fire as much stuff at it as you can. :sniper:

Anyway, seeing as you mentioed BWGEN, does it really work?
Apart from that, you should try everything, just like Seeker said, different things work for different people.
I use one of the meditation presets in BWGEN to plant suggestions for me to become lucid. I've never tried to run it at night. Cannot stand things on my head while trying to sleep.
