Yes, that is the reason you're asking yourself in the first place. See, the point of doing a state test or reality check is to get you questioning if you are awake in the external world or if you are awake in the dreamworld, and to find something to prove your answer.
It's not enough just to ask, because if you don't answer it while you're awake, will you answer it while you're asleep if you're not in the habit of answering it? Likely not. Are you dreaming right now? No, you're not. Now, what makes you know you're not dreaming? Get in the habit of answering that question, and you'll find yourself lucid sometime. :)
I prefer reversing two of the words to create "I AM dreaming," which, when turned into a mantra, becomes a powerful tool for both self-affirmation and auto suggestion. :D
when performing a reality check, I momentarily suspend all I know or think I know and make like I'm dreaming. Then, I try to find something out of the ordinary to back up the notion that I'm dreaming. If I fail, instead of saying, "I can't possibly be dreaming," I say, "Well, I must be having a hella hard time becoming lucid at the moment. I shall try again later."
