      vertigo in dreams

(I think I saw a thread about this before, but I'm not sure...)

Last night I had a non-lucid dream where I was sick and I was experiencing vertigo. It felt really real. I've had vertigo a lot since last year, but it stopped a few months ago. Do you think this was just my mind remembering vertigo or was I really experiencing it while I was sleeping? Because I've been sick for a few days and the first time I got vertigo I had pneumonia. (but the doctor said it was something with my inner ear.)

Vertigo occurs essentially because a part of your body has sent a confusing message to your brain.

To better understand why this may occur, one must first understand what makes us feel balanced - how the brain perceives that we are standing upright. This is facilitated by the vestibular system. The doctor's may tell you that this feeling is being induced by your inner ear because this is where the vestibular system is located.

The vesitbular systems functions with a system of hair-like calcium carbonate. These are found within the otolithic organ. These hairs stimulate the membrane they rest on by gravity. Further into the ear, there are semicircular canals. These canals are filled with the liquid endolymph. When we move our body, the endolymph moves, when the endolymph moves out-of-control and creates inertia. Thus, even though you are not moving, the endolymph has enough inertia to continue moving and signal to your brain that your are moving. Other signals contradict and confuse one another to create the feeling of vertigo.

This adds to the theory that dreams are somatically induced. Many individuals who have ear infections will complain about dreams about vertigo or falling. When I was young, I had a severe ear infection myself. I found that I had many dreams of falling and intense vertigo.

The induction of vertigo into dreams depends on your medical condition that you stated - what are the specifics? Also, keep in mind that during REM sleep, middle ear muslces are stimulated (for unknown reasons). This may also have an influence on the vertigo feeling you are experiencing.

I hope I have been enlightening.

It makes me laugh that people actually take the time to e-mail maddox. Do you actually think that he cares that you like U2 and he doesn't? You went to his website and read about his thoughts, and then you e-mail him and bitch at him for having an opinion? If you don't like it, don't read it, simple as that.

I thought the article was hilarious, as is most of maddox's stuff.

You don't seriously expect him to care do you?

O'nus is the only one who's made an on-topic post so far.

I usually can self-induce the sensation of vertigo when falling into a deep enough trance. So there must be exceptions.

I don't like U2 much, they just seem more like an elevator band than a rock group you know?

old maddox is a crazy bastard, I love his articles, even if I don't agree I always get a laugh out of it, especially the hate mail.
