I can't stay lucid for more than 2 seconds!

I started a thread the other day about waking up after thinking I had become lucid, but last night I DEFINITELY did become lucid. I was in a speedboat that was travelling on a motorway (highway) at great speeds, and I was terrorfied that we were going to crash, but then I suddenly thought how odd it was that a speedboat was travelling on land and I thought of the film, Waking Life, where the guy gets a lift in a speedboat that is also a car near the beginning of his lucid dream (those who have seen it will know what I mean). I suddenly realised that I was in a dream. But before I had the chance to do anything I saw the dream fade away and within a few seconds I had woken up!

Are there any tips on how to stay lucid when I realise? I am confident that tonight I will become lucid, but I reeeeaally don't want to suddenly wake up when it happens again.

I kinda have the same problem, except for me I can usually only stay lucid for around 30 seconds to a minute before I wake up. Really annoying.

Alright. I just recently joined this sight, but before that I had many lucids. I have been on a bit of a dryspell(until yesterday :panic:) but I used to rub my hands when I became lucid. Also, it was almost second nature for me to shout "clear or focus" to make sure the dream did not fade. I think the reason it worked so well is because I truly believed that this is my lucid and I was going to stay in it(that and I tried not to get to crazy or overexcited). If you feel your dream fading try to clear it again with the ways already said or by spinning and focusing on clearing. When you go lucid and clear it using this stuff^ you should look for your dream guide; mine has told me so much. You can also look at the tutorials on this site. Anyway, goodluck MagicSeahore and cybereality. Hope you guys do not go on a dryspell like I did(even though its fixed :banana:). :shadewink:

Cool! I was just reading a book by Stephen Laberge (Exploring the World of Lucid Dreaming) and I just read like an hour ago about how to prevent premature awakenings. Basically he talked about activating your 5 senses to stay into a dream. This way your brain will be more focused on what is happening in the dream, then on what your [I]actually[I] doing (lying in bed).

When you enter a lucid dream, you basically want to "stabilize" everything. What I would do first is quickly rub my hands, and visualize or think about how warm it feels when you rub your hands in real life. Then yell "clarity or focus" this makes the visuals of the dream much more, crisp and life like. Focus on any sounds you may be hearing, like the birds chirping, or the wind blowing. There may be a smell maybe rain, or fresh flowers, pollution even! taste isn't really that big of a sense but you may be chewing some gum, or you might be thirsty.

Basically the more your focus on those things the more effort your brain is putting into your dream ( thus keeping it stable) then on focusing on your physical body, ( which would just be lying in bed).

Oh and as mentioned above, dream spinning is also a great idea. For spinning to work though ( I tried it once and it didn't help too much), you actually have to visualize/remember how it feels to be spinning in real life. Feel the wind rushing around you, and the dizziness you may experience because one time I just spun around just for the sake of spinning in hopes of stabilizing the dream and nothing changed.

You probably got excited. That happened to me the first time. I was just like "HOLY CRAP I'M ACTUALLY DRE-... Awake."

Also, Stabalize. Focus on senses. Rub your hands together, do extra reality checks.

^^^^ LMAO!!!! This happened to me all the time back when I was having my first few lucids and didn't know a thing about stabilizing.
Great advise, marcher. I was gonna say the same, but you said it all for me. :P

My first lucid was pretty long because I basically had no expectations for the first one. I treat dreaming as a gift. When I wake up from a regular dream I don't groan that I didn't have a lucid, I'm just happy I had a dream. I know the lucid will come with time. Basically when I was thinking of what to do in my first lucid I just decided to make sure to stabilize and reality check, no flying goals yet and such, I know I'll have more.

So when I became lucid finally I didn't do anything but rub my hands together, I did this nearly every 15 seconds. Until I felt stabilized enough I walked around and looked how real everything was, still stabilizing. Eventually I came around to the back of my house went out m second floor window and jumped :P What can I say? I wanted to see what would happen, and I woke up.

So basically don't expect to do all this amazing stuff in your first lucid, try the basics and build from there :D

Ways to stop waking up after realizing you are asleep:

- Avoid getting over excited initially. Hey, its damn amazing when it happens. But keep cool. :)
- RC and "lock" the lucid dream. A sudden realization needs to be back up by a good RC. Check your hands and count your fingers, look at a clock, or hold your nose and try to breathe.
- Stabilize. Rub your hands together to make things more solid and vivid.


Other helpful ideas:

- During the day, randomly imagine you have just realized you are awake. Train yourself to not get too shocked or over excited.
- During the day, RC and stabilize

Thanks for your suggestions guys, but it happened again. I Became lucid and immediately looked down at my hands. I looked at them for a couple of seconds before trying to tell myself to 'focus'. Unfortunately it faded out within a couple of seconds....

I don't think I'm ever going to get the hang of this.

If things start to go black, quickly try and feel objects. If you start to lose sight, get your hands and start force opening your dream eyes.

I did that once. It worked… Until I thought the sounds were me waking uo :headbang:.

A few possibilities:

If using WILD techniques or other 'immediate entry' techniques: You probably got too exited and inadvertently woke yourself. Make sure to stabilize before doing ANYTHING to make sure you can keep going.

If using DILD or similar technique: You may have become lucid at the very end of your sleep cycle. In this case, when you wake, DO NOT MOVE A MUSCLE. Focus on getting back asleep and converting the short DILD into a DEILD. Look this up if you are not sure what it is. Use the 'failure' to your advantage.


I also find that if big areas are turning into the crimson 'eyes closed' haze, focusing on the detail of what is still there can force the haze to recede in the late stages of a dream. This is VERY temporary, at least for me, and means that any goals should be done quickly. Everyone is different, though, and dreams are random. Assumptions can make things difficult, so find what works for you when you get a long LD to test with.

I've had a few LD's, and only one of those I was able to control. What I did was I stopped what I was doing and said "It's ok, I got this" and was ablet o stay lucid for a little longer, but soon lost the dream after try to calm down again

It's just nerves and you got excited. My LD's I've lost because I became excited. I've been out of trying to LD for a while, but still keep writting in my DJ, but should get back into try to LD more
